Las Vegas—Popular 1960s rock group The Lovin’ Spoonful will perform at the Suncoast Showroom July 6 and 7.
The Lovin’ Spoonful burst onto the music scene to become one of the most revered groups in music history with their first seven singles reaching the Billboard Hot 100 top 10 throughout 1965 and 1966.
Combining the best of folk music and rock and roll, with a touch of country thrown in, they gave us such hits as "Daydream," "You Didn't Have to be So Nice," "Nashville Cats" and the anthem for a hot July evening, "Summer in the City." The bands first single, “Do You Believe in Magic,” remains a defining rock and roll anthem.
Several songs by The Lovin’ Spoonful have been featured in movies including “Pow!” as the opening theme of Woody Allen’s “What’s Up, Tiger Lily” and “Darling Be Home Soon” in Francis Ford Coppola’s “You’re A Big Boy Now.” In 1980, the band performed a cameo in Paul Simon’s film “One-Trick Pony.”
In 2000, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame.
The current line-up of The Lovin’ Spoonful includes two of the original members, Steve Boone and Joe Butler, as well as Jerry Yester, Mike Arturi and Phil Smith.

Las Vegas—Comedienne, writer, actress and author Paula Poundstone is bringing her unique stand-up act back to The Orleans Showroom, July 5 and 6.
Poundstone began nurturing her stand-up comedy talent in 1979 on the Boston comedy scene before moving to San Francisco. By 1990 she had moved to Los Angeles, starred in multiple HBO comedy specials and appeared on “Saturday Night Live.” Poundstone was the first woman to receive a Cable ACE Award for a comedy special for her one-hour HBO special “Cats, Cops, and Stuff.” She received her second Cable ACE Award for her self-titled HBO talk show series.
Continuing with many successes throughout the 1990s, Poundstone starred in “The Paula Poundstone Show” on ABC, appeared in her second one-hour special on HBO titled “Paula Poundstone Goes to Harvard,” and appeared on camera and as the voice of characters in several television shows including: “Cybill,” “Science Court,” “Hercules” and “Home Movies.” In 2007, she appeared in a BRAVO comedy special, “Paula Poundstone: Look What the Cat Dragged In.” Poundstone is the recipient of an Emmy® Award for her field pieces on the PBS program “Life & Times” and most recently appeared in the television documentary “Why We Laugh: Funny Women.”
Poundstone is a regular panelist on NPR’s weekly quiz program “Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me,” where her impeccable timing is key to the show’s format. She has written several magazine articles, including five years of writing the back page column in “Mother Jones,” and has authored multiple books, including “There’s Nothing In This Book That I Meant To Say.” Her first comedy CD, “I HEART JOKES: Paula Tells Them In Maine,” is available at www.paulapoundstone.com.

Las Vegas—Premier illusionist Rick Thomas will return at the Suncoast Showroom June 29 and 30.
Weaving magic, music and dance into his show, Thomas executes innovative and unique illusions that have helped make him a worldwide success.
Thomas began his magical career at the age of seven. At 13, he began performing semi-professionally and by 18, he was performing at the Disneyland Hotel.
Thomas’ ability to perform in a variety of settings has brought him success, starring in more than 50 expositions and fairs across the United States and Canada, and on more than 300 cruises around the world. His honors include the coveted “Magician of the Year” from the Academy of Magical Arts and “Stage Magician of the Year” from the World Magic Awards. Thomas previously headlined in Las Vegas for 15 years.
Thomas’ background includes ballroom dancing, accounting for his graceful movements on stage. At the age of five, Thomas began teaming with his sister, Tamara, in ballroom dance competitions. They earned the title of Junior United States Ballroom Dancing Champions while both were in their teens.

Las Vegas— “We’ve Only Just Begun: Carpenters Remembered,” a tribute to popular 70s music group The Carpenters, is coming to the Suncoast Showroom June 22 and 23.
“We’ve Only Just Begun: Carpenters Remembered” is a celebration of the duo’s music, starring Michelle Bertling Brett as Karen, and accompanied by a live band of versatile Nashville musicians led by Harry Sharpe.
Grammy®-winning duo Karen and Richard Carpenter sold more than 100 million records and charted twelve top ten singles including “(They Long to be) Close to You,” “Rainy Days and Mondays,” “Yesterday Once More” and “I Won’t Last a Day Without You.”

Las Vegas—Comedienne, actress and Internet sensation Anjelah Johnson brings her stand-up act to The Orleans Showroom June 28 and 29.
Johnson’s viral video “Nail Salon” skyrocketed her into online stardom around the same time she earned a recurring role on the sketch comedy series “MADtv” in 2007 and 2008. Her infamous “MADtv” character “Bon Qui Qui,” a disgruntled fast food employee with no filter, received worldwide success and has been watched by more than 55 million YouTube viewers.
Johnson hosted a one-hour Comedy Central special, “Anjelah Johnson: That’s How We Do It” in 2009. A second special will be released from her hometown of San Jose, Calif. later this year.
As an actress Johnson has starred in, and lent her voice to, numerous films including “The Box,” “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel,” “Marmaduke” and “Our Family Wedding.” On the small screen, Johnson has guest starred on “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “On the Up” and “Ugly Betty.”
Johnson began her career as a professional cheerleader for the Oakland Raiders. As an Oakland Raiderette, she was named Rookie of the Year in 2002 and performed in Super Bowl XXXVII. She credits cheering on the Raiders for helping her make the transition to stand-up comedy.

Las Vegas— Considered “one of the funniest stand up comics" by her peers and ranked among Entertainment Weekly's 25 Funniest People in America, Wanda Sykes will perform at Treasure Island Theatre June 21 at 9 p.m. Guests must be 18 years or older to attend.
Sykes began her stand-up career performing at the Coors Light Super Talent showcase in Washington D.C. and quickly rose to superstar status. She spent five years as a performer and writer for HBO’s critically acclaimed “Chris Rock Show” where she won an Emmy® Award for “Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Special” in 1999. The gig opened the door to appearances on television shows including “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Crank Yankers,” for which she voiced the character Gladys Murphy. She wrote, produced and starred in her own show “Wanda at Large,” which premiered on FOX in 2003.
In 2004, Sykes released her first book “Yeah, I Said It,”- a hilarious collection of essays touching on life, family and current events.
Her first HBO comedy special, “Wanda Sykes; Sick and Tired,” debuted in 2006 and was nominated for a 2007 Emmy® Award for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special. Sykes second HBO special “I’ma Be Me,” premiered in 2009 where she tackled topics like the first black president, being a new mom and aging. The Surfaris - Featuring original guitarist, Bob Berryhill. Co-author and recording artist of Wipe Out and Surfer Joe. The Surfaris began their career by composing and recording “Wipe Out”, one of the most popular songs recorded in a generation. Wipe Out, Surfer Joe and others captured the sound of the early 1960’s. Initially catapulted by the California surf culture, The Surfaris transcended the local scene into international stardom.
Crystals – When Phil Spector discovered The Crystals, they were still in high school. Their first recording “There’s No Other, Like My Baby” was also their first hit, catapulting them straight to the Appollo Theater. They went on to enjoy five more Top Ten records, “He’s A Rebel”. “Da Doo Ron Ron” and “Then He Kissed Me” being their most popular hits.
The Brooklyn Bridge - The Brooklyn Bridge was created in 1968 when two bands, The Rhythm Method and The Del-Satins featuring Johnny Maestro, merged. The Trammps featuring Earl Young – The Trammps have become synonymous with the Disco Era. In 1976, the group was showered with honors including Best Disco Album, Best Disco Artist, Best Disco Single and Best Disco Single Unreleased (1976) for the LP album “Where the Happy People Go” that contained the hits “Disco Party”, “Hooked For Like” and “Soul Seachin’ Time.” In 1978, Saturday Night Fever made John Travolta, his white suit and The Trammps’ song “Disco Inferno” part of American pop culture history.

Las Vegas—The world-renowned ‘King of Sufi Music’ Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan will perform at the Treasure Island Ballroom May 31 at 8:30 p.m.
Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is part of a family deeply rooted in musical tradition. He was trained by his uncle Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in the art of classical music and Qawwali – a form of Sufi music popular in South Asia. He began performing at the age of three for his family and made his first public performance at the age of 9 during the death anniversary of his grandfather.
Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan performed solo songs while touring the United Kingdom with his uncle in 1985, and he debuted as a playback singer in the movie “Paap” in 2004. Recently, he recorded songs for his native Pakistan and songs for Bollywood films.
In collaboration with his uncle, he worked with Eddie Vedder of the rock band Pearl Jam on the soundtrack of the 1995 film “Dead Man Walking.” In 2002, Ali Khan worked on the soundtrack for “The Four Feathers” and was a guest on The Derek Trucks Band’s song “Maki Madni.” His vocals were featured on the soundtrack of “Apocalypto” in 2011.
In 2012, he won “Best Music Talent in a Film” at the London Asian Film Festival for the song “Koi Dil Mein” from the film “Tamanna.”
