Ethnic Express International Folk Dancing (ages 8+)

Scottish Country Dancing (ages 13+)
Fridays, 6:30 to 8:45 p.m.
Admission: $5 general admission; $4 for members of Southern Nevada Old Time Contra Dancers. Pay at the door.

Scottish country dancing is the beautiful ballroom dance of Scotland and may be lively and joyful or gentle and graceful. From the first chord to the final bow or curtsey, participants will be inspired by the driving reels, jaunty jigs, snappy strathspeys or lilting airs. Summer Youth Dance Camp (ages 11-18)
Register starting June 1 for camp Wednesday-Saturday, July 6-30, 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Each year the city of Las Vegas Arts Commission and the city of Las Vegas sponsor the “Celebrating Life!” fine arts competition to recognize the talents of Las Vegas artists. Clark County residents age 50 or better are invited to enter their original works in this 11th annual juried event. Artists enter original works in the following fine art media categories: Drawing and Pastel; Mixed Media (2-D); Painting; Sculpture and Ceramics (3-D); Watercolor and Gouache; and Photography. This year’s judges will be Stewart Freshwater, Suzanne Hackett-Morgan and Bobbie Ann Howell. Artists whose works are not selected for the 2011 Celebrating Life! exhibition will have the option to display their submissions in the Salon de Refusés exhibit in the Charleston Heights Arts Center Gallery. Award-winning pieces from the 2011 Celebrating Life! exhibit will travel to the City Hall Bridge Gallery to be displayed July 7-Aug. 25, 2011.

This exhibit examines loss, change and abandonment in the American West. It features 30 photographs by Adam Jahiel, Daniel Cheek and Nolan Preece, who have independently photographed subjects that are changing or quickly disappearing from the Western landscape. Preece will attend to give a lecture about his work. Organized by the Nevada Arts Council, this exhibit is one of the traveling exhibits in the Nevada Touring Initiative – Traveling Exhibit Program, and is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Nevada State Legislature. “Hot Glass: Art and Architectural Glass from Stacey Neff and the New Mexico Experimental Glass Workshop” features new ideas for the very old material of glass. The New Mexico Experimental Glass Workshop (NMEGW) is dedicated to fostering the development of new art and architectural glass from recycled material. The pieces are made by a variety of excellent artists who come from other art disciplines, in cooperation with Executive Director Stacey Neff and facilitating glass experts. Selected NMEGW Fellowship recipients, all of the showcased artists are demonstrated professionals of excellence in their fields. Artists included in the exhibit are Martin Horowitz, Dana Newman, Sam Scott and Stacey Neff.
