LAS VEGAS - May 3, 2012 - Good times, good music, good food and good fun! Summer at the Cannery Casino officially begins May 26, 2012 with the KOOL Radio’s Summer of Fun Kick-Off Festival and Car Show.

The annual and free event will feature American groups from the 1960s and 70s whose hit songs were mainstays on the radio.  The lineup includes Shades of Blue, The Dixie Cups, Gary Lewis & The Playboys and The Buckinghams.  Tickets are available to the general public, free of charge, and can be picked up at the Cannery Casino box office at the front desk.

Shades of Blue - Their #1 hit and Gold record “Oh How Happy” is one of the most recognized songs from the 1960s. Since then, it’s been licensed more than 20 times by a number of companies for use in commercials. Now comprised of vocal group veterans Stuart Avig, Donald ReVels, Carlos Valverde and Charles Davis, Shades of Blue carries on the legacy put in motion by Motown legend Edwin Starr.

The Dixie Cups -  “Chapel of Love,” and “Iko, Iko” brought the group near instant fame.   Originally consisting of sisters Barbara and Rosa Hawkins and their cousin, Joan Johnson, the group hit #1 with “Chapel of Love” which knocked the Beatles “Love Me Do” out of the top spot. Today, Barbara and Rosa tour with their sister, Athelgra Neville.

Gary Lewis & The Playboys - Their hits include “This Diamond Ring,” “Sure Gonna Miss Her,” “Count Me In” and “Everybody Loves A Clown.”  Their first gig was playing at Disneyland and as the crowds grew larger, music producers took note. Gary Lewis & The Playboys would propel many of their songs into the Top 10 charts.

The Buckinghams - Founding members Carl Giammarese and Nick Fortuna, have always tried to stay true to their Chicago roots.  The trademark opening horn notes on the #1 hit “Kind of a Drag” became a signature of the Chicago horn sound as well as The Buckinghams.  Their hits include “Don’t You Care,” Hey Baby They’re Playing Our Song” and “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy.”

Along with the music, members of the Mustang & Classic Ford Club of Las Vegas and the Las Vegas Cruisin’ Association will park several hundred of their classic cars along Aerojet Way, directly south of the Cannery Casino. The first 200 drivers who enter will receive a free T-shirt.
