The Cannery Row Buffet to Feature Elvis’ Favorite Foods!
LAS VEGAS - August 7, 2012 – Close friends and co-stars of Elvis Presley will join together as part of the crowd favorite “A Celebration of the King’s Life,” honoring Elvis’ music and legacy at the Cannery Casino on Friday, August 24th and Saturday, August 25th, 2012.
The commemoration will feature a performance by top Elvis tribute artists Johnny Fortuno, who will be performing Friday, and Ronnie McDowell, who will be performing Saturday, as well as The Stamps Quartet. Ray Walker of the Jordanaires, Millie Kirkham and Sammy Shore who opened for Elvis from 1969 thru 1972. In addition, special guests include former co-stars of Elvis, Darlene Tompkins and Cynthia Pepper. Other guests include Sonny West, Elvis’ personal friend and bodyguard and Steve Christopher, DJ with “Elvis On Air.”
The Cannery Row Buffet will also honor “The King” with a special section featuring all of Elvis’ favorite foods. Fans can dine on Deep Fried Pickles, Southern Fried Chicken, Smothered Pork Chops, Collard Greens, Green Bean Casserole, Ham Hocks and Potato & Cheese soup.
Johnny Fortuno’s powerful stage presence is a testament to the energy displayed by Elvis during his most popular years. Fortuno, praised by celebrities and critics alike as one of the top Elvis tribute artists, will perform many of Elvis’ hits including “Don’t Be Cruel,” “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Suspicious Minds” and “In the Ghetto.”
Ronnie McDowell has mastered Elvis’s undeniably dazzling stage presence. He has an amazing string of hit songs that he has amassed over the years, but it is his riveting stage presence and genuine warmth that fills the seats again and again. It was McDowell’s heartfelt and self-penned tribute song “The King is Gone” that took off immediately gaining airplay on country and pop stations across the country and around the world. McDowell also had a career as a solo artist, and now tours relentlessly with his band, the Rhythm Kings.
The Stamps Quartet, a Gospel group, performed on a regular basis with Elvis Presley on many recordings. The group also performed in concert with Elvis as backup vocalists from 1971 to 1977. Elvis called The Stamps Quartet his favorite group of Gospel singers.
Ray Walker & Millie Kirkham, worked with Elvis for many years in the recording studio and on the road. Walker also worked with the gospel group The Jordanaires who Elvis greatly admired and hired to work for him from 1954 through 1970. Millie was one of Elvis’s favorite vocalists and her high soprano pipes can be heard on such classics as “Blue Christmas” and “My Wish Came True.”
Darlene Tompkins and Cynthia Pepper worked alongside Elvis during his movie-making years. Tompkins co-starred with Elvis in Blue Hawaii. Pepper co-starred with Elvis in Kissin’ Cousins. Tompkins and Pepper will speak to fans about their memories of Elvis and what it was like to work alongside him.
Sonny West traveled the world with Elvis. He met the singer in 1958 and the two became friends and eventually Sonny became one of Elvis’ bodyguards.
A Celebration of The King’s Life begins at 8 p.m. at The Club inside the Cannery Casino. Tickets are $12.95 plus additional fees on Friday; $22.95 plus additional fees on Saturday; if attending both shows fans will receive $10 off and tickets can be purchased online at www.cannerycasino.com.
