"We're especially delighted to be hosting America's finest amateur boxers because we know that professional champions inevitably emerge from this group," said John Groom, president of Caesars Palace. "Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, Sugar Ray Leonard, Evander Holyfield and dozens of others among the greatest fighters in boxing history have performed here at the Palace. That is why we're known as the 'Home of Champions.' We also know that virtually every champion gets his start in an event like this, so we fully expect an exciting week of action, plus a glimpse into boxing's future."
"We are extremely pleased to be presenting our national championships in such a boxing-rich location as Caesars Palace," said USA Boxing Executive Director Mike Stone.
The U.S. National Amateur Boxing Championships have been held annually since 1888, making it the longest-running boxing tournament in the United States. Twenty U.S. champions, including Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, Oscar De La Hoya, Sugar Ray Leonard and Pernell Whitaker went on to earn gold medals at the Olympic Games.
"This will give amateur Olympic-style boxing wider exposure," said USA Boxing President Dr. Robert Voy. "It will also provide our young boxers the opportunity to gain major boxing fan support, and the personal motivation that comes from performing their skills in the boxing capital of America."
The last time the U.S. Championships were held outside of Colorado Springs was in 1987, when Buffalo, N.Y., played host to the event.
USA Boxing, as the national governing body for Olympic-style boxing, is the United States' member organization of the International Amateur Boxing Association. As the national governing body, USA Boxing is responsible for the administration, development and promotion of Olympic-style boxing in the United States. Headquartered at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, USA Boxing sponsors a host of programs - from developing the sport and its athletes at the local, regional and national levels, to sponsoring national and international dual competitions and selecting teams for international events, including the Olympic Games, World Championships and Pan-American Games.
