Enjoy Free Outdoor Cultural Fiesta Sept. 25 At East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center
Everyone is invited to the free “Gran Tardeada Cultural Fiesta en La Plaza” on Friday, Sept. 25, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center, 250 N. Eastern Ave. This outdoor event will feature a special exposition of beautiful Mexican folklorico costumes as well as performances by Mariachi Franco, Mexico Vivo Dance Company and Ballet Folklorico Izel. Food will be available for purchase. The event is presented by the city of Las Vegas with La Organizacion Duranguense “Unidos Por El Pueblo,” with support from La Nueva 103.5 FM, Recuerdo 99.3 FM, Radio Variedades 870 AM and La Capsula. Amid the turbulent backdrop of Ecuador’s bid for independence from Spain in 1809, a romance blooms between librarian Pedro and the beautiful Judit. Will the couple help usher in the revolution, or will their voices be forever silenced? Directed by Camilo Luzuriaga, the lavish romantic drama stars Marilú Vaca, Aristides Vargas, Gonzalo Gonzalo, Víctor Hugo Gallegos and Alfredo Espinosa. Series curator Luis Bonilla will introduce the film and lead a discussion in Spanish following the screening. This 2004 film is unrated, runs 100 minutes, and is in Spanish (no subtitles). Scottish Country Dancing is the beautiful "ballroom" dance of Scotland, a social dance form with roots stretching back for centuries. Enjoy both traditional and modern dances. Participants are grouped into sets, typically of 3 to 5 couples arranged either in two lines (men facing ladies) or in a square, and work together in the dance. Dancers should wear comfortable clothes and soft shoes such as gillies, ballet slippers or jazz shoes. Ladies will find that skirts help them to enjoy the natural flow of the dance. Kilts are not required, but are heartily encouraged.
