City Of Las Vegas Reed Whipple Cultural Center Focuses On Youth

More Music, Dance & Drama Options And New Hours Begin Jan. 4
Reed Whipple Cultural Center will start the new year with a new focus on music, dance and drama options for youth. The many diverse opportunities will appeal to the wide variety of interests in the city’s diverse population and contribute to healthy lifestyles. New offerings for January include beginning and intermediate level arts, dance, pottery and drama classes in varying age ranges between 4 and 18 years old. The center also will adjust its hours to be open Monday through Friday, 12:30-8:30 p.m. and Saturdays 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., until school recesses for the summer. Registration for the winter session classes will remain open until classes are full. Classes begin the week of Jan. 4. Among the new youth opportunities is the All-Star Youth Jazz Band for musicians age 14 to 20. Talented musicians who wish to expand their musicianship and improve their performance techniques, reading and improvisation are encouraged to audition on Monday, Jan. 4, at 5 p.m. at the Reed Whipple center. Applicants should prepare a ballad and a swing jazz etude for the audition. The band season will run from September through June annually and will include concerts at Reed Whipple and other local venues.
Young singers, dancers, musicians and spoken word artists ages 7 to 18 will have the opportunity to practice professional performance techniques in the Young Artists Showcase Series at Reed Whipple Cultural Center. Auditions will take place the fourth Friday of each month from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Reed Whipple center.
Rainbow Company Youth Theatre, winner of the 2009 Nickelodeon Parents’ Pick Award for Best Theatre Group for Kids, will offer these six-week classes: Creative Drama (ages 4 to 6), Drama Skills for Youth (ages 7 to 9), Young Actors Workshop (ages 10 to 12) and Teen Improvisation (ages 13 to 18).
