Las Vegas Team Competes Against Regional Champions At Darling Tennis Center Oct. 2-4
The city of Las Vegas will play host to the 2009 United States Tennis Association (USTA) Adult 4.0 League National Championships for men and women Oct. 2-4 at the Amanda & Stacy Darling Memorial Tennis Center, 7901 W. Washington Ave., and at Lorenzi Park tennis courts, 3333 W. Washington Ave. Champions from 17 regional sections across the nation will compete beginning at 7:30 a.m. each day. The Darling Tennis Center women’s team, consisting of team captain Eileen Marasco and members Caroline Lee, Mindy Cumutt, Hillary Wolfson, Elizabeth Lundstrum, Deena Dia, Stacey Carney, Margaretha Breytenbach, Crystal Flaton, Kelli Jorgensen, Kathy Pederson, Dena Deluca, Amanda Comtois and Mary Stengel, will participate as champions of the six-state Intermountain section. Semi-final matches are scheduled at the Darling Tennis Center for 7:30 a.m. Sunday, immediately followed by finals matches. Spectators are welcome to attend at no charge.
The USTA uses the National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) to rank players according to skill level, from a low of 1.0 (beginner) through 13 levels to 7.0 (world-class player). The NTRP is not based on age divisions. The Darling Tennis Center will host the USTA 4.5 National Championships Oct. 30-Nov. 1. Other upcoming events include the NCAA Women’s Mountain Region Championships Oct. 14-18 and the NCAA Men’s Mountain Region Championships Oct. 21-25. Spectators are welcome to attend free of charge.
Sept. 25-27, the USTA Open National Team Championships were held at the Darling Tennis Center. The Las Vegas men’s team, captained by Rob Kinas, defeated a field of 40 teams to win the men’s 2009 open championship. Darling Tennis Center Head Tennis Professional Misha Yevtich and Junior Competition Coach Brian Wilson competed as part of the team of Las Vegas tennis professionals that included Tim Blenkiron, Adam Carey, Henner Nehles, Les Elsinga and Derek Brooks.
The Amanda & Stacy Darling Memorial Tennis Center, the largest tennis center in the state of Nevada, consists of 23 tennis courts, including one main court with stadium seating for approximately 2,800 spectators. It also offers a small pro shop, locker rooms and office space. The tennis center is part of the 108-acre Charlie Kellogg and Joe Zaher Sports Complex, which includes 11 reservable soccer fields, a walking/jogging track, playground, picnic areas and parking.
