PRESIDENT JIMMY CARTER HAS MAGICAL EXPERIENCE AT CAESARS PALACE

Details

LAS VEGAS - Former President Jimmy Carter had a magical time at Caesars Palace Thursday evening, March 22. Greeted at the famed Caesars' porte cochere by newly appointed Caesars Palace President John Shigley, the presidential party headed off to enjoy dinner at Caesars Magical Empire.

After the entrée, the Magical Empire host Stradivarius asked Carter to make an executive decision and order dessert for the entire dining room. His selection of the Triumvirate Sampler, which included cheesecake with fresh berries, flourless chocolate cake and tiramisu, was met with an approving round of applause. Discovering that some of his fellow diners were celebrating a birthday, Carter graciously stopped eating and crossed the dining room to congratulate them with handshakes and hugs.

After dinner, the former president enjoyed the magic shows in the various Magical Empire showrooms. Close-up magician Bram Linetsky marked the occasion by changing a one-dollar bill into a Canadian one-dollar bill from 1976, the first year of Carter's presidency. Former first-lady Rosalyn participated in card tricks with Sophie Evans, but Carter was most delighted when slight-of-hand artist Apollo Robbins magically pick-pocketed the accompanying Secret Service agents. When the baffled agents realized that they were missing wristwatches, wallets, and even car keys, the items were quickly returned without international incident.

After the magic performance, the Carters went to Cafe Lago with personal friend, Caesars' pianist David Osborne. The party was treated to a special performance from the Thurman White Middle School choir. The 35-member children's choir sang "Eternal Father, Strong to Save," the U.S. Navy hymn and Mr. Carter's favorite song. Mr. Carter was so moved by the piece that he actually stood and sang with the choir and requested two encores. Osborne, dubbed "pianist to the presidents," then performed "Bumblebee Boogie" and Mr. Carter's oft-requested "Georgia on My Mind."

President Carter was in Las Vegas to promote his most recent book, an autobiography entitled "An Hour Before Daylight," among other engagements.
