Magia Mexicana Dance Showcase At East Las Vegas Community Senior Center Jan. 22


Everyone is invited to enjoy the “Magia Mexicana Mexican Dance Showcase” by Ballet Folklorico Xyachimal on Friday, Jan. 22, at the East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center Ballroom, 250 N. Eastern Ave. The troupe of more than 70 members, founded in Las Vegas to present Mexican culture through traditional folk dance, will showcase its vibrant and colorful dances in a 7 p.m. performance. Tickets to the show, priced at $5 for ages 13+, $3 for youth ages 6-12, and free for ages 5 and younger, will be available at the door. Call 229-1515 for tickets and information.

28th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade (all ages)
Monday, Jan. 18, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
North on Fourth Street from Gass to Ogden avenues
More than 100 parade entries and a crowd of thousands are expected to enjoy this annual public celebration to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Roads crossing the parade route and staging area between Charleston and Ogden will be closed from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, call 229-6276.

Free Food for Health & Soul Community Wellness Series (ages 50+)

Presented by University of Nevada, Reno Cooperative Extension, Food for Health and Soul is a nutrition education curriculum designed to teach skills to modify family-favorite recipes for better health. The goal of this six-session curriculum is to decrease the risk for chronic disease. Current city of Las Vegas Senior Citizen Programs membership required.

Free Business Seminars Offered To Local Business Owners (adults)

This one-hour seminar will focus on advanced financial analysis, and growth and cash-flow strategies for small business owners. Sponsored by the city of Las Vegas Office of Business Development, in conjunction with the Adam Hodson CPA firm, the free seminar is limited to 40 people. Advance registration is required. Scottish Country Dancing (ages 13+)

Cosponsored by Southern Nevada Old-Time Contra Dancers, the National Folk Organization, and the city of Las Vegas. This class is not suitable for younger children unless they have previous dance experience. Scottish Country Dancing is the beautiful “ballroom” dance of Scotland. The dances may be lively and joyful or gentle and graceful. From the first chord to the final bow, dancers are inspired by the driving reels, jaunty jigs, snappy strathspeys or lilting slow airs. And thanks to the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, any dancer can be welcomed by a local group almost anywhere in the world.

Division III NWBA Men’s Wheelchair Basketball Tournament (adults)

Bring your personal papers to be shredded, lightly used items and housewares to donate to Opportunity Village, small tools for Habitat for Humanity and old cell phones for the Cell Phones for Soldiers program. Local community vendors will offer tax service tips and other information and services. Opportunity Village will provide shredding services (limit five boxes of shredding per car).

Killian’s Angels Concert (all ages)

This fantastic all-female band offers an amazing spectrum of tunes, arrangements and styles from contemporary Celtic to country and classic rock. Killian’s Angels will set your toes to tapping and your hands to clapping. Each lovely and accomplished musician sings and plays a variety of instruments including violin, tuba, mandolin, tin whistle, guitar, keyboard, harmonica, drums, bodhran, spoons, bass and more. This concert also will feature Sharon Lynn and the Celtic Storm Dance troupe.

Saturday Contra Dancing (all ages)

Dance to the live music of an acoustic band playing joyful fiddle tunes, driving reels, circle mixers and a waltz or two. These lively community dances recapture aspects of New England and frontier barn dances, with more modern twists. All dances are taught and called. Newcomers and families are welcomed. No partner is necessary. Wear comfortable, soft-soled shoes and casual clothing.
