The Boulder Plaza Sculpture Park, Boulder Avenue at Main Street.
The public is invited to participate in building a community sculpture. The project, dubbed “Lucky Lady Lucy,” will take shape during an eight-week residency at the plaza to create a 20-foot figure of a Las Vegas showgirl — a temporary artwork to be made from thousands of playing cards and casino chips. The community-driven project is sponsored by the city of Las Vegas and the Society for Experimental Arts and Learning. Once completed, Lucky Lady Lucy will be displayed throughout the summer as a public art sculpture at sites to be determined. The Lucky Lady Lucy figure eventually will be transported to the Burning Man Festival this fall and will be burned as part of the festival. In addition to Lady Lucky Lucy, a smaller secondary sculpture, also mobile, will be created and assembled at the site, and it may eventually be burned as part of a downtown arts event next spring. This secondary artwork, along with Lucy, is intended to create an annual community sculpture-building project in the 18 b arts district. The Urban Playa Lucky Lady Lucy Project will involve a variety of interactive public education components, such as tours, artist talks and workshops. The figure will be featured prominently in the June 3 First Friday celebration. Boulder Plaza is located at the intersection of Main Street and Boulder Avenue, north of Charleston Boulevard and the Arts Factory. Call the project coordinator, Cory Mervis, with the Society of Experimental Arts and Learning, at (702) 582-5007 for more information.
