Thurman Hackett was born in Fresno, Calif., in 1936. While living in Los Angeles during the 1960s, he performed as a jazz musician for a hobby. An alto saxophonist, he sat in with older musicians at local jazz clubs and learned from them. He worked most of his adult life as an interior designer. Now retired, he is using his artistic skills for paintings, many of which depict jazz artists. Most of his paintings are filled with bright colors and bold, jagged shapes.
In addition to jazz artists, Thurman also paints American Indians, Egyptian figures, people engaged in sports, cars, and most things to do with American culture and history. He also dabbled in abstract geometric works. Not limiting himself strictly to paints and canvas, he has used tin foil and pieces of wood and rock in his art, as well. Hackett recently published a book, “Historical Journey Into Jazz,” which talks about his early career and features 30 paintings of his original art. For more information on the artist and book, e-mail to jazzhistoricaljourney@earthlink.net.
