Proclamation to be Read Friday, Jan. 14, Kicking Off Day at the DSW Parade of Shoes, Followed by the Largest Gathering of Miss Americas Ever in the Pageant’s History
LAS VEGAS (Jan. 2011) – On Friday, Jan. 14, beginning at 12 p.m. underneath the Arc de Triomphe at Paris Las Vegas, it will be announced the following day, Saturday, Jan. 15 will officially be “Miss America Day” in Las Vegas. The proclamation was designated by the office of Mayor Oscar B. Goodman. The proclamation encourages all “citizens (of Las Vegas) to welcome the participants and organizers of this fabulous event to our fine city.” This declaration is particularly momentous as Miss America celebrates its 90th anniversary.
The proclamation will be read by Cathy Tull, vice president of marketing, Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. Shortly thereafter, Robin Leach will serve as Master of Ceremonies by kicking off the highly-anticipated return of a beloved tradition, the Miss America Parade, renamed the “DSW Show Us Your Shoes Parade” presented by DSW Designer Shoe Warehouse. For the first time since 2005, the 2011 Miss America Pageant festivities will include this unique tradition in the host city of Las Vegas. The event is open to the public. All 53 contestants, as well as 46 Miss Americas will walk the parade.
The “Show Us Your Shoes” tradition of the Miss America Parade began in the early ‘70s in Atlantic City, N.J, when a group of parade viewers in bleachers overlooking the boardwalk wanted to get a better look at the beautiful shoes the contestants were wearing while traveling the parade route in their convertibles. The contestants happily obliged and “showed their shoes” to the crowds, as they will proudly do when they walk the Arc de Triomphe at Paris Las Vegas on Friday, Jan.14, 2011.
Following the parade, at 3 p.m. inside the Chi Theater at Planet Hollywood, nearly 50 Miss Americas will gather for an once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunity – making it the largest gathering of Miss Americas in history
The live telecast presented by DSW on ABC will take place at Planet Hollywood on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 9 p.m. (EST)/tape delay (PST).
