Big Brother & The Holding Company and John Lee Hooker Jr. to Co-Headline Festival

LAS VEGAS April 20, 2006 The Cannery Casino & Hotel offers a taste of summer with the fourth annual Blues, Brews and Barbecue festival June 23 24 at The Club indoor/outdoor festival grounds. The festival serves up various styles of barbecue from notable local restaurants along with craft brewed beers and hard ciders.

The festival hours are Friday, June 23 from 5 p.m. to midnight and Saturday, June 24 from 2 p.m. to midnight. Admission is $5 at the door.

The Cannery beverage department will feature various craft and locally brewed beers and hard ciders including brews such as Anchor Steam, Firestone Double Barrel, New Belgium Fat Tire Amber and Skinny Dip, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Pyramid Apricot Ale and Hefeweizen, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Wyder s Pear Cider, Wyder s Raspberry Cider and Strongbow Cider. For the customer who would like to sample as many of the brews as possible a Brews Sampler Pack will be offered. The price of the sampler pack is $20 and contains coupons for 10 eight-ounce cups of any beer or cider.

Notable local barbecue restaurants will be serving food on the festival grounds including Famous Dave s, Memphis Championship Barbecue, Seven Seas, Sweet Georgia Brown s, Holland Dog Express Corn on the Cob, and more.

This annual festival can offer something for everyone whether you re a beer lover, barbecue lover or blues lover. It s a great way to jump start summer fun, said Frank Vignola, Cannery Casino General Manager.

A newcomer to the Cannery s festival Janis Joplin s original band, Big Brother & The Holding Company will perform on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 10 p.m. Big Brother evolved out of the San Francisco rock scene of the 1960s and was in the forefront of the psychedelic blues/rock music movement. The band was formed by Peter Albin, Sam Andrew, James Gurley and Chuck Jones in a Victorian mansion boarding house owned by Peter s uncle at 1090 Page Street in the Haight-Ashbury area of San Francisco. Janis Joplin later came to sing with Big Brother & The Holding Company, cementing their place as one of America s best rockin blues bands.

John Lee Hooker Jr. will sing blues songs from his Grammy nominated CD, Blues with a Vengeance, on Friday at 10 p.m. and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Hooker Jr., son of the legendary John Lee Hooker, began performing at the age of eight in his hometown of Detroit, Michigan. By the age of 18, he released his first recording, Live@Soledad Prison, a collaborative effort with his father. Throughout his career, Hooker Jr. has performed with blues greats such as Luther Tucker, Deacon Jones, Elvin Bishop, Ron Thompson, Pete Escovido, Bo Didley, and BB King. In 2004, the Bay Area Blues Society presented John Lee Hooker Jr. with the Comeback Artist of the Year award.

Returning to the festival grounds again this year with his blues and zydeco tunes is fan favorite Moody Scott with various performances beginning at 6 p.m. each night. In 1964 Scott hit the charts with Everybody Come Clap Your Hands.

There will be continuous entertainment throughout both days of the festival. Blues Storm, a contemporary rhythm and blues band plays Friday at 5 p.m. and will perform popular tunes including, After Midnight, The House is Rockin , Midnight Hour and Sweet Home Chicago.

John Earl & The Boogie Man Band who open Saturday s festivities at 2 p.m., has been a top Las Vegas blues act retaining a tight, lively and authentic presentation of funk and blues.

Section 8, playing Saturday at 4:30 p.m., includes blues vocalist, Lucinda Chatfield, who plays keyboards, harmonica, and has toured with the Righteous Brothers and Dallas Hodge, formerly of Canned Heat.
