Spring Break Youth Drama Workshop (grades 2-6)

This drama workshop for grades 2 through 6 includes theatre games, improvisation, acting exercises, mime, rehearsal skills and

Youth Spring Break Arts Workshop: Acting For TV (ages 10-18)

Learn film acting techniques from veteran actor Antonio Fargas. The two-day workshop will culminate in a live, free community performance at the West Las Vegas Library Theatre on Saturday, April 3, 3 to 4:30 p.m.
Rainbow Company Youth Theatre Presents “The Orphan Train”
April 2, 3, 8, 9 and 10 at 7 p.m. and April 4, 10 and 11 at 2 p.m.

On May 28, 1914, an “orphan train” left New York City and traveled to westward to Midwest towns. On board were unwanted, orphaned children, hoping for a home — any home, anywhere. Chugging between encounters of anxiety, laughter, rejection and acceptance, the stories of nine children unfold in this heartwarming, moving play about the dreams of finding a family. Scottish Country Dancing (ages 13+)

Cost: $5 general admission, $4 for Southern Nevada Old Time Contra Dancers members.

Cosponsored by Southern Nevada Old-Time Contra Dancers, the National Folk Organization, and the city of Las Vegas. Classes begins promptly at 6:30 p.m. and run until 8:45 p.m. This class is recommended for ages 13 and up. It is not suitable for younger children unless they have previous dance experience. Scottish Country Dancing is the beautiful “ballroom” dance of Scotland. The dances may be lively and joyful or gentle and graceful. From the first chord to the final bow or curtsey, dancers are inspired by the driving reels, jaunty jigs, snappy strathspeys or lilting slow airs. And thanks to the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, any dancer can be welcomed by a local group almost anywhere in the world.

Dance to the live music of an acoustic band playing joyful fiddle tunes, driving reels, circle mixers and a waltz or two. These lively community dances recapture aspects of New England and frontier barn dances, with more modern twists. All dances are taught and called, newcomers and families are welcomed. No partner is necessary. Wear comfortable, soft-soled shoes and casual clothing.

This tribute to big band leader Harry James will feature Tony Scodwell, his trumpet and big band. Scodwell was a member of the James Orchestra for many years. Also on the program will be song stylist Lisa Mayer, and together they will perform the hits made famous by Harry James, such as “You Made Me Love You,” “Sleepy Lagoon,” “It Seems As If I’ve Heard That Song Before” and many more.

Cine En El Centro Film Series Feature “Soñar No Cuesta Nada”

Series curator Luis Bonilla will present a short introduction of the featured film, “Soñar No Cuesta Nada” at 6 p.m. After the screening, Bonilla will lead a discussion on the film in Spanish. Based on a true story, this action-packed comedy follows four overworked Colombian soldiers who stumble upon $46 million while on a rescue mission in the jungle. They decide to keep the cash for themselves rather than turn it in to the government. With their only route home destroyed by rebels, the soldiers work feverishly to get back to civilization so they can take advantage of their newfound fortune. The Cine en el Centro Spanish-language film series is presented by the city of Las Vegas, Cox Communications, VeneMovies, Venevision International, La Nueva 103.5 FM, Recuerdo 99.3 FM, Radio Variedades 870 AM, Tortillas Los Arcos and El Mercadito. The movies, all award-winning, blockbuster films from Latin America and Spain, have been donated by VeneMovies and Venevision International to provide cultural enrichment to the Hispanic community. Born in 1938 in Electric City, Wash., Dennis Oppenheim received his master of fine arts degree from Stanford University. Now residing in New York City, Oppenheim was recognized for lifetime achievement in the arts at the 2007 Vancouver Sculpture Biennale and has received international attention for a body of conceptual work that includes performance, sculpture, and photographs. “Las Vegas Perspective: Reflections of the African-American Artist” Exhibit (all ages)

The work in the exhibit will highlight local African-American artists and is being presented in honor of Black History month. Artists that will be exhibited are: Abraham Abebe, Dayo Adelaja, Harold Bradford, Sylvester Collier, Lolita Develay, Vicki Richardson, Lance Smith, Mario Smith, and Joseph Watson. Lisa Bigalke teaches drawing and design at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in art. She earned her Master of Fine Arts degree in studio art from Louisiana State University. An internationally exhibiting artist, Bigalke uses color, texture, pattern, paint and print media to create mixed-media works that focus on the natural landscapes of places she has visited. Both artists explore their interests in the natural world around them through the medium of quilt making. Both artists use landscape and environmental events to present the same world through two different perspectives. The exhibit will include quilted objects that transcend the traditional notion of quilt making to present work that is related to painting and sculpture.
