City of Las Vegas Opens New Spring & Summer Art Exhibitions

Everyone Invited To Artists’ Receptions For 11th Annual ‘Celebrating Life!’ And
‘Great Basin Exteriors: A Photographic Survey’ Exhibitions
The city of Las Vegas will open two new art exhibitions this month with free public receptions. Everyone is invited to the artists’ reception and awards ceremony on Friday, May 20, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. for the 11th annual Celebrating Life! juried exhibition at Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet the artists and view the original drawings, pastels, mixed media, paintings, sculptures, ceramics, watercolors, gouache and photography. The competition is open each year to Clark County residents age 50 and older. This year’s judges will be Stewart Freshwater, Suzanne Hackett-Morgan and Bobbie Ann Howell.
The public also is invited to view the exhibit, meet photographer Nolan Preece and hear a lecture about his work at the opening of “Great Basin Exteriors: A Photographic Survey” on Thursday, May 26, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Historic Fifth Street School Gallery, 401 S. Fourth St. This exhibit examines loss, change and abandonment in the American West. It features 30 photographs by Adam Jahiel, Daniel Cheek and Nolan Preece, who have independently photographed subjects that are changing or quickly disappearing from the Western landscape. Organized by the Nevada Arts Council, this exhibit is one of the traveling exhibits in the Nevada Touring Initiative – Traveling Exhibit Program, and is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Nevada State Legislature. In 2009, artist Stacey Neff founded the New Mexico Experimental Glass Workshop, a not-for-profit organization with the mission of expanding and exploring the possibilities for glass as a sculptural medium. This exhibition includes Neff’s signature large glass and fiberglass sculptures as well as some new glass works developed by renowned artists from other disciplines, including painter Sam Scott, collage artist Dana Newmann, and sculptor Martin Horowitz. Neff states, “The works included in this exhibition demonstrate a range of experimentation and applications previously unseen in the medium of glass.”
