SCHEDULE PACKED FOR BIGGEST-EVER VEGAS VALLEY BOOK FESTIVAL

Details

Over 70 writers will participate in this annual literary event

LAS VEGAS — Over 70 authors, poets and journalists will participate in the fourth annual Vegas Valley Book Festival, set for October 13-22. The 10-day long program includes a full schedule of readings, book signings and panel discussions, as well as expanded children’s programming, workshops for writers, film screenings and two evenings of spoken word performances. Most festival events are FREE and require no tickets or reservations.

The 2005 Vegas Valley Book Festival is a Signature Event of the Las Vegas Centennial Celebration, and focuses on Las Vegas themes, including the literature of poker and prizefighting. Presentations will also focus on Las Vegas history, highlighting the many books that have been published in connection with the Las Vegas Centennial.

According to festival program coordinator Sara Pitman, “the Vegas Valley Book Festival is designed for readers of all ages. We think you will enjoy the program no matter what your reading interests are. And this year’s expanded schedule of events should make it possible for more people to attend programs that interest them.”

If you like to laugh, you’ll love this festival. “We have brought in some of the funniest writers ever to appear in Las Vegas, including our keynote speakers – satirist Joe Queenan and broadcasting legend Stan Freberg,” notes festival director Kris Darnall. “If you ever feel like you’re too busy to read, or can’t remember the last thing you read for fun, these writers will make you want to pick up a book again.”

The 2005 festival features keynote presentations by advertising guru and legendary broadcaster Stan Freberg, the man who virtually invented the “funny ad,” and popular satirist and commentator Joe Queenan. Neither have appeared in Las Vegas before, and they headline a festival program that includes a host of other humorists, including author Neal Pollack and renowned cartoonist Kyle Baker.

Presented by Nevada Humanities in partnership with the Henderson Libraries, Clark County Parks and the City of Las Vegas Cultural Affairs Division, the Vegas Valley Book Festival is southern Nevada’s only major public event celebrating literature and reading. The annual community event features nationally-known writers and speakers, and also showcases a number of Las Vegas’ own talented writers.
