Spanish-Language Movie Series Continues Monthly at East Las Vegas Community Senior Center

The public is invited to watch “El Cometa” on Thursday, Nov. 19, as part of the Cine en el Centro monthly film series at East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center. Series curator Luis Bonilla will present a short introduction of the featured film at 6 p.m. After the screening, Bonilla will lead a discussion on the film in Spanish. Admission is free. The center is located at 250 N. Eastern Ave., on the southeast corner at Stewart Avenue. Call (702) 229-1515 for more information.

Set in 1910, during the uprising of Madero’s forces against the Porfirio Diaz command, “El Cometa” is the story of love, war and the cinema. Romualdo runs a variety show that just lost its biggest star, his son Victor (Diego Luna), to the lure of the cinema and cinematographer Guy (Patrick LeMauff). Guy agrees to help Romualdo get his act back on track in exchange for harboring Valentina (Ana Claudia Talancon), the daughter of a Madero rebel. Produced in 1999, the unrated movie is in Spanish and runs 99 minutes.

The Cine en el Centro Spanish-language film series is presented by the city of Las Vegas, Cox Communications, VeneMovies, Venevision International, La Nueva 103.5 FM, Recuerdo 99.3 FM, Radio Variedades 870 AM, Tortillas Los Arcos and El Mercadito. The movies, all award-winning, blockbuster films from Latin America and Spain, have been donated by VeneMovies and Venevision International to provide cultural enrichment to the Hispanic community. Upcoming films include “Santos Peregrinos” Dec. 10, and “Partes Usadas” Jan. 14.

The East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center annually hosts numerous programs, from concerts and festivals to classes in the arts, for children and adults. Call the center at (702) 229-1515 for a fall ArtQ programs brochure, or view it online at www.lasvegasparksandrec.com.
