City of Las Vegas December 2009 Recreation, Sports & Fitness Special Events

All activities are subject to change. List includes special events only. Centers will be closed Dec. 25. Veterans Memorial Leisure Services Center will be closed Dec. 19-Jan. 2.

Family EVENTS

Letters To Santa
Through Dec. 11.
Fee: $1 per letter
Veterans Memorial Leisure Services Center, 101 N. Pavilion Center Drive, (702) 229-1100.
Parents, have your child deliver his or her letter to the Santa Mailbox at Veterans Memorial
Leisure Services Center by Dec. 11. Information forms (filled out by parents) must be delivered with the letters. Information forms may be picked up at the front desk anytime after

November 30. Your child will receive a personal letter back from Santa in time for Christmas.

20th Annual Holiday Handicraft Sale (all ages)
Friday, Dec. 4, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Free admission for shoppers.
Las Vegas Senior Center, 451 E. Bonanza Road, (702) 229-6454.
Purchase handcrafted items that may include ceramics, artwork, jewelry, quilts and more!
Crafters, age 50 or older, may rent a table for $10 (6-foot, limit 3) or $15 (8-foot, limit 2).  Call 229-6454 for more information or to reserve your table. Deadline for table reservation is Nov. 21.

Holiday Craft Show (all ages)
Saturday, Dec. 5, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Free for shoppers.

Enjoy the annual holiday craft show. All crafts are handmade. Shop for the holidays!

Red Bull Vegas AmJam Skatepark Series Hooligan’s Holiday Competition (ages 6-adult)
Saturday, Dec. 5, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Registration and practice will begin at 10 a.m.
Fee: $10 to compete; spectators are free. Helmet required for competitors.

Happy Everything Day (all ages)
Saturday, Dec. 19, noon to 3 p.m.
Fee: $3 per participant. All those who arrive in a costume will receive a goody bag!
Municipal Pool, 431 E. Bonanza Road, 229-6309.
Celebrate all past and future holidays in one day!  Hunt for eggs, bob for apples, Independence Day balloon toss, eat iced chocolate, costume contest, gift guessing contest, pumpkin slam contest, swimming games, Thanksgiving pie-eating contest…and lots more. Holiday music will be played.

Free Holiday Synchronized Swimming Show (all ages)
Saturday, Dec. 19, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Municipal Pool, 431 E. Bonanza Road, 229-6309.
Synchronized swimmers from Henderson, Clark County and the city of Las Vegas will perform to holiday music. Refreshments will be served while they last.

Youth & Teen Activities (not sports)

Cooking & Creativity Workshop (ages 3-5, with a parent)
Wednesday, Dec. 9, 9:30 to 11 a.m. Advance registration required.
Fee: $12 per workshop

This is a parent-and-child class. Our recipes include food and fun. Prepare a yummy treat each class without messing up your kitchen!

Free Breakfast With Santa (ages 5-12)
Saturday, Dec. 12, 9 a.m. to noon
Doolittle Community Center, 1950 N. J St., 229-6374.
Children nominated by their elementary school counselor will have the opportunity for a picture and breakfast with Santa, and receive an age-appropriate gift from their wish list donated by a sponsor.

Scrapbooking Workshop (ages 6+)
Saturday, Dec. 12, 10 to 11:15 a.m. Advance registration required.
Fee: $10 per child; parents free. Includes supplies.

Holiday Make It & Take It Workshop (ages 2-12)
Wednesday, Dec. 16, 4 to 5 p.m.

Come join us for some holiday fun as we enjoy punch and cookies and make a craft.

Holiday-Get-A-Way (ages 1-15)
Friday, Dec. 18, 5 to 7 p.m.
Stupak Community Center, 300 W. Boston Ave., (702) 229-2488.
Participants must register for a gift between Nov. 30 and Dec. 5. Youth will have their picture taken with Santa, experience a taste of Christmas and receive a gift.

Parents Shopping Night (ages 4-10)
Friday, Dec. 18, 5:30 to 9 p.m.
Fee: $10

The youth will enjoy pizza and entertainment while parents get holiday shopping done!

Winter Break Specialty Theme Camp (ages 4-15)
Monday, Dec. 21, through Thursday, Dec. 31, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. No camp on Dec. 25 or Jan. 1.
Fee: $100 per week (Monday-Thursday); $90 for an additional child from the same household.
Mirabelli Community Center, 6200 Hargrove Ave, 229-6359.
Mirabelli Community Center will offer a weeklong, themed specialty camp concentrating on a particular activity. Call for more information. Registration opens Nov. 23.

Winter Splash Camp (ages 6-11)
Monday through Thursday, Dec. 21-24, 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Fee: $100 per child for the week; $90 for an additional child from the same household.
Municipal Pool, 431 E. Bonanza Road, 229-6309.
This fun-filled water camp will provide a safe atmosphere with close supervision. Children ages 6-11 will experience snorkeling, water safety, games, crafts, water polo and much more. Children will need to bring a sack lunch, swimsuit, towel and a change of clothes each day. Registration is limited to 25 participants. Call for more information.

Winter Break Camp (ages 4-15)  Registration opens Nov. 23.
Monday, Dec. 21, through Thursday, Dec. 31, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. No camp on Dec. 25 or Jan. 1.
Fee: $65 per child per week (Monday-Thursday); $60 for an additional child from the same household.

Youth will have fun and stay busy enjoying age-appropriate activities, including arts, crafts, holiday games and sports, under the supervision and guidance of professional staff. Kids will need to bring a sack lunch daily. A limited number of scholarships will be available through the Seasonal Camp Office. Patrons must fill out a financial aid application and provide all pertinent income and residential paperwork in order to be considered. Financial aid applications can be picked up at the camp site or any city of Las Vegas recreation facility. The fall Leisure Guide, which has program codes and detailed information on each facility’s camps, classes, programs, special events, sports, workshops and activities, is available online at www.lasvegasparksandrec.com.

 

Adaptive Recreation EVENTS

 

Project D.I.R.T. (Developing Interests in Risk Taking) Valley of Fire Camping Trip (ages 18+)
Saturday & Sunday, Dec. 5-6. Advance registration required.
Fee: $60 per person, includes tents, food and transportation
Project D.I.R.T. provides people of all abilities the opportunity to explore new recreation and leisure possibilities through alternative recreation and outdoor/adventure experiences. Call 229-4796 for information and registration.

Annual Holiday Dance (ages 18+)
Saturday, Dec. 12, 7 to 10 p.m. Advance reservation required by Dec. 4.
Fee: $20 per person
Lieburn Senior Center, 6230 Garwood Ave.
Kick off of the holiday season with a night of fun, music, dancing and food. Call 229-5177 for information and reservations.

 

Division III Wheelchair Basketball Tournament (ages 18+)
Saturday & Sunday, Dec. 12-13; 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday
Free for spectators.
