CITY OF LAS VEGAS CONTINUES QUEST TO GET RESIDENTS IN SHAPE

Second Annual Get Movin' Walk Scheduled for May 17

As part of the continuing effort to get Las Vegas residents into shape, the public is invited to join Mayor Oscar B. Goodman in his quest to increase the livability of our great city at the second annual Get Movin' with Mayor Oscar B. Goodman Healthy Lifestyle Walk on Saturday, May 17, at 8 a.m. at the Charlie Kellogg and Joe Zaher Sports Complex, located at 7901 W. Washington Ave. Participants can start their day with an invigorating one- or two-mile walk and stay for a fun day in the park at the Sports Fest.

The mayor continues to encourage everyone to learn about the importance of diet and exercise and to take advantage of the many recreational opportunities offered by the city. The mayor recently lost 10 pounds as part of the Feel Great in '08 Health Fair challenge. The charity weigh-in pitted Councilman Steven D. Ross, Mayor Goodman and Councilman Larry Brown against Clark County Commissioner Chip Maxfield to see who lost the most weight. Councilman Brown lost the most weight, at 22 pounds.

"Cardiovascular disease is the number-one killer in this country, and I have taken an active role in encouraging the public to get in shape," Mayor Goodman said. “The Mayor’s Healthy Lifestyle Initiative is a way to get the community to eat right and stay healthy.”

The Mayor's Healthy Lifestyle Initiative, which can be found along with other healthy tips at www.gethealthylasvegas.org, consists of a three-point plan:

Get Smart: Diet and nutrition are essential components to a healthy lifestyle and quality of life. Educate our citizens about proper diets.

Get Up: Sedentary activities increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and obesity. Educate the citizenry on importance of a healthy, active lifestyle.

Get Out: The mayor and City Council are supportive of parks and recreation amenities and are committed to providing quality facilities in the city of Las Vegas. Identify recreation center, parks and trails near you.

The city of Las Vegas has many leisure services facilities that offer a wide range of activities, from cultural performances, sports leagues, and children’s day camps to Corporate Challenge, the largest amateur athletic competition in the state. We encourage you to visit our wonderful facilities, and along the way become healthier and happier.

RESIDENTS INVITED TO PUBLIC ART UNVEILING

Mayor, City Council Members Will Also Take Part In Charity Weigh-in

Residents are invited to join Councilman Steven D. Ross as he, along with the city of Las Vegas Arts Commission, celebrates the completion of two public artworks by Las Vegas artists. In addition, Mayor Oscar B. Goodman, Councilman Ross and Ward 4 Councilman Larry Brown will step on the scale for a weigh-in as a follow up to the Feel Great in '08 Health Fair challenge that was held in January. The event will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, at the City of Las Vegas Centennial Hills Community Center, located at 6601 North Buffalo Drive. The charity weigh-in begins at 9:30 a.m.

"This is a great opportunity for residents to view the amazing pieces of artwork from two talented Las Vegas artists," Councilman Ross said. "My colleagues and I will also see if our hard work has paid off as we weigh in to benefit charity."

The art unveiling will feature Las Vegas artists Jeff Fulmer and Darius Kuzmickas, who were commissioned by the city of Las Vegas Arts Commission to create public art features specifically for the new Centennial Hills Community Center. The city’s "percent for the arts" ordinance supports the integration of original, site specific artwork into city capital construction projects. The artwork was made possible by working in collaboration with the city of Las Vegas Public Works and Leisure Services Departments, the city of Las Vegas Office of Cultural Affairs and Luchessi-Galati architects.

Markers, by Darius Kuzmickas, is a series of eight, eight-foot-high, backlit glass columns featuring abstracted photographic imagery of the surrounding desert landscape and cityscape. Las Vegas Bearpoppy by Jeff Fulmer is a grouping of cut and painted aluminum silhouettes inspired by "arctomecon californica," a species endemic to northern Clark County and listed by the State of Nevada as a critically endangered species.

The charity weigh-in will pit Councilman Ross, Mayor Goodman and Councilman Brown against Clark County Commissioner Chip Maxfield to see who lost the most weight. Commissioner Maxfield weighed in at the last council meeting. The winner’s favorite charity will receive a $1,000 donation from Cox Communications.
