An Evening Focused on Solution
by Dr. Adele Zorn

David Marlon Solutions Foundation founder at podium

Douglas Cooper, NV State Board of Medical Examiner speaking

An important annual reception of the SOLUTIONS FOUNDATION was held at the magnificent home of Donna and Charles Ruthe. Guests enjoyed delicious canapés catered by Josh Strickland, while beautiful background Harp music was played by Kathy Kavanaugh.

David Marlon, Founder of the SOLUTIONS FOUNDATION gave a passionate speech about what is going on in our community regarding youngster’s alcohol and drug addictions. Las Vegas has one of the highest rates of substance abuse in the country. David warns everyone that many students are primarily intoxicated by using prescription drugs that they find in family medicine chests. Families are usually not aware of how many older prescriptions are in their medicine cabinets and that their contents are slowly lessened by youngsters taking them. These prescriptions are usually opiates and are highly addictive. He warns everyone to get rid of older prescriptions that are not being used and to be aware of the contents of prescriptions being used, and count them.

Hostess for the event Donna Ruthe speaking

Former NV First Lady Dawn Gibbons at podium

Hostess for the event, Donna Ruthe and Former First Lady, Dawn Gibbons were introduced and talked about what can be done to overcome this epidemic of drug addiction. They said the goal of the SOLUTIONS FOUNDATION is to reduce the number of first time drug users and to provide a resource to those currently struggling with addiction to find help.

Dawn Gibbons, who has done so much to help SOLUTIONS FOUNDATION talked about the SOLUTION FOUNDATION’s successful CLOUD program for Adolescent intensive and outpatient help. She told about how SOLUTIONS FOUNDATION visits schools and gives students understandable booklets that explain the horrors of addiction. These 3 booklets were written by David Marlon “Underage Drinking” “Opiates” and “Crystal Darkness.” These booklets along with an awareness program have helped to bring down drug usage by students.

An extremely interesting speaker was, Douglas Cooper from The Nevada State Board of Medical examiners who came to Las Vegas from Reno for this event. He told about the Board’s work and also talked about doctors giving drugs, knowing they are being used recreationally. He spoke about a Dr. who was arrested for this and was still giving excessive drugs to patients. He also said that while schools are a place for learning, unfortunately it is also a place for drugs
