The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Committee held week long King Week activities prior to celebrating his birthday on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

One of the events I attended was the 31st Annual Scholarship Banquet and Gala at THE ORLEANS. This year, the event not only celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, but also commemorated President Obama’s pre-inauguration. The theme of this year’s event was: “Dream With a Vision; Live With a Purpose.

The Las Vegas Jazz Ensemble provided entertainment as guests entered the Ballroom and played throughout the event. The program started with a presentation of Colors by the Cheyenne High School Color Guard.

Madison Kennedy sang the National Anthem and then the Black Nation Anthem was sung by the Las Vegas Mass Choir. Rev. Eric Cole of Pleasant Grove M.B. Church did the Invocation.

Delois Reece welcomed guests and Wendell P. Williams, founder and president of the Dr. King Jr. Committee introduced the Grand Marshals, Lillian McMorris and Dr. Marion D. Bennett, Sr. (who unfortunately was unable to attend).

Scholarship awards were presented to Preston Pierce Scott, Destenee Hogan, and Nyla Whalum as well as other awards.

Dinner was served and after dinner M.C. Lillian McMorris introduced guest speaker, The Honorable Gary L. Loster, former Mayor of Saginaw, Michigan.

The Honorable Gary L. Loster gave an impassioned speech about Dr. King and about what has been accomplished in the Black Community. MGM resorts, Caesars Entertainment and Cox Communications were honored for their contributions to Community Services. Mario Berlanga, Jr.was given an award for all he does in his One Stop Shop Neighborhood Grocery to help people going through difficult times.


The following night I attended the Clark County Democratic Party – 2013 Inauguration Gala at SPRINGS PRESERVE. Chris Miller, Chair of the Clark County Democratic Party and Danielle Moreno arranged this event to celebrate the inauguration here in Las Vegas for those who could not go to Washington for the occasion.

Chris Miller welcomed guests and Lillian McMorris who was the event M.C. Lillian introduced the Keynote Speaker who was the effervescent speaker from last night’s Dr. King’s Gala, former Mayor of Saginaw, Michigan, the Honorable Gary L. Loster. Loster once again excited the audience with his eloquent delivery.

Guests enjoyed a menu of passed Hors d’oeuvres that featured:

Fig and Marscarpone in Phylo, Wild Mushroom in Phylo, Beef Tenderloin with Caramelized Shallot Jam, Blackened Chicken Satay with Blue Cheese Sauce, Caramelized Garlic Ginger Prawns and Glazed Short Ribs.

Desserts and beverages were served buffet style and featured: French Pastries, Petit Fours, Chocolate Dipped Strawberries, Fruit Tarts, Chocolate Truffles and Eclairs.

Faith in America’s Future Dancers Carlee Hank, Celena Monroe-Moreno, Makiya Rashard, Naomi Cook and Alexis Brooks performed.

Musical entertainment by D.J. Winston Sanders

D.J. Winston Sanders provided musical entertainment and guests danced the night away.

Each guest received a gift of their picture taken with President Obama’s figure.
