A magnificent weekend was experienced by guests who came from near and wide for the American Humane Association Lights of Compassion Weekend. The weekend events featured a star-studded collection of public figures, philanthropists, entertainers, and celebrities. The first event was an afternoon Tea and Fashion Show at Bellagio. The next event was a Great Gatsby-themed Gala at the Anthem Country Club Estate of Bruce and Barbara Lee Woolen.

For more than one hundred and thirty years, the American Humane Association has brought compassion and commitment to the betterment of children and animals across our nation. This event raised funds for the American Humane Association, Local Animal Rescue Efforts and Wounded Warriors healing care of therapy dogs, Wags4Warriors.

The first day of the weekend event was an afternoon celebration at the BELLAGIO that featured a silent auction at a Tea and Fashion Show that was held in a beautiful setting overlooking the Bellagio pools. Seated at a very long table were American Humane Association leaders from all parts of the United States. Other guests were seated at round tables with an enlarged rotating Lazy Susan serving finger sandwiches with smoked chicken salad, crab, salad, avocado and smoked salmon dill cream cheese. Additionally there were watercress mousse and cucumber open faced bread square sandwiches and a wide variety of pastries and Teas. Well-known celebrities in attendance were: Siegfried Fischbacher and Roy Horn (Siegfried & Roy), Lynette Chapell (Dragon Lady in Siegfried & Roy Show), Lisa Vanderpump (Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and Dancing with the Stars), Frankie Moreno, Las Vegas singer/pianist headliner and Carol Connors, two-time Oscar nominated singer/songwriter.

Frankie Moreno, host for the event, introduced Dr. Robin Ganzert, President and CEO of the American Humane Association (AHA) who came to the event from Washington, D.C. Dr. Ganzert spoke about the wonderful work the AHA has been doing. Others were called to the podium such as Megan Blake and her super dog Smiley who is the official SpokeDog for the Hero Dog Award. Megan is host and producer of Animal Attractions on PBS that won an Emmy about the flash mob for Pet Adoption. Megan spoke about the Wags4Dogs program and how money raised from the weekend events will be used for the Wags4Warriors program that brings healing service dogs to returning military warriors. Lisa Vanderpump came onstage with her adorable dog Giggy and spoke about AHA. Frankie Moreno brought his two fabulous Great Danes who were clothed in fashions for the fashion show. Dr. Ganzert then narrated the Fashion Show. The dogs included war hero dogs who had been in Iraq with Wags for Warriors. The dogs were all clothed in fashions from Custom Critters and Fifi & Romeo. Guests parading the dogs were clothed in fashions from Elie Tahari.

The celebration continued with entertainment by Frankie Moreno and Carol Connors, two-time Oscar nominated singer/songwriter. Carol Connors came on like blazes in a “Rocky” boxing robe because she co-wrote the theme from the movie “Rocky.” Carol was extremely interesting and hilarious about her amazing life (including 9 months as Elvis’ girlfriend). She sang beautifully and captured the audience with the new song she wrote that was influenced by animals called “Unconditional Love, Unconditionally.” The song was used for PetSmart charities and received an Emmy nomination.

Day 2: GREAT GATSBY THEMED GALA

How can I describe the Great Gatsby-Themed Gala Celebration? High on a hill is a glamorous 20,000 square foot estate that overlooks Las Vegas. Bruce and Barbara Lee Woolen graciously offered their fabulous estate for the AHA Lights of Compassion Great Gatsby themed Gala. With such a beautiful setting, their estate, spacious patio landscape with winding pool and panoramic scenic views could have been a backdrop from the Gatsby movie. As guests entered, a cocktail reception featured musical performances by classical Guitarist and Baritone Eric Castro and singer/comedian Caitlin Comesky. The formal dining room featured exquisite jewelry from the famous Hollywood Collection of Kazanjian of Beverly Hills. Guests were able to bid and buy some of the magnificent jewelry in a silent auction.

Guests were dressed in Gatsby type attire and the honorees for the Gala were: Congressman Joe Heck, Lisa Vanderpump, Mrs. Howard Hughes (actress Terry Moore), Wayne Newton, and Christine Robinson of The Animal Foundation. The Award Ceremony was hosted by Jim Snyder and Jessica Moore, Anchors for KSNV Channel 3 who announced their upcoming marriage at the event. The outdoor area they spoke from first envisioned a view of a spectacular sunset, followed by an exquisite nighttime view of Las Vegas Valley’s brilliant lights. Jim and Jessica introduced Bruce and Barbara Woolen who thanked all for coming. Dr. Robin Ganzert gave an enlightened speech about AHA, and the honorees were introduced.

Afterwards, guests enjoyed a performance by Lola Astanova, world renowned concert pianist. Dinner was then served at carving and serving stations on the patio and in a pastry room. A live auction, entertainment by Frankie Moreno and comedian Caitlin Comesky and an after-party was next. The after-party with musical performances was held in the Estate’s lovely plush-seated Theatre. Quite a wonderful event for a very worthwhile cause.
