ONE NIGHT for ONE DROP 4TH ANNUAL GALA

By Dr. Adele Zorn

Some of the cast of One Night for One Drop show

A remarkable night was experienced by those who attended One Night for One Drop Gala. I would say this is the best of the best show and event that happens in Las Vegas annually. That is saying much as there are so many wonderful shows and events here in Vegas, but none ever tops One Night for One Drop. This is the fourth edition and the first three were held at “O” Theatre at Bellagio, “Michael Jackson One” Theatre at Mandalay Bay and the “Love” Theatre at The Mirage last year. I attended last year’s One Night for One Drop Gala and marveled at that event and now again, this year’s event was absolutely the tops. How can it not be great when all those involved give of not only their talents, but of their hearts. Five hundred people are involved at the event with 150 with the show. About 120 performers from Cirque Du Soleil shows on the Las Vegas Strip put on a two hour show in Reynolds Hall at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts. Not only was the night so great, but the cause and fundraiser it represents making Dreams Come True by bringing the lifeblood of clean water to developing countries and to all countries around the world. Jerry Nadal Senior Vice-President of Cirque du Soleil and Board member of One Drop USA spoke to the audience and videos were shown of impoverished villages where water is not available and causes pathetic children sickness and death. This inspired audience donors to readily voice their donations to One Drop making the fundraiser so successful by bringing in $6.5 million. This One Drop’s water-access initiative in it’s four year event has now raised a total of $24.2 million.

Some of the biggest names in entertainment came out to support One Night for One Drop by Cirque du Soleil in Las Vegas, joining featured performers, GRAMMY-nominated singer-songwriter Leona Lewis and TV star Miles “Baby Boogaloo” Brown as they raised funds and awareness for critical water issues worldwide. Presented by MGM Resorts International, McLaren Automotive and Zappos.com, the star-studded benefit generated $6.5 million for ONE DROP’s global water initiatives, with all proceeds supporting water access and conservation programs across the globe. The dazzling, one-night-only experience was inspired by events that reflected the personal story of artistic director Hassan El Hajjami. While visiting his grandmother in Morocco he walked with her and came to understand that she had to struggle and walk to get water every day, because there was no running water in the village. It had a profound effect on him and he realized the need for one of the world’s most important causes – safe and sustainable water access to all throughout the world.
This personal story was the basis for the very touching performance that was presented that evening.
The show’s story begins in a village in Africa and focuses on a small family – mother father and little boy. One day, the mother isn’t feeling well so the little boy begs his father to let him go fetch water from the well. His father is proud of his son but reminds him of the dangers. After a long trip the boy arrives at the well and throws his bucket in to get the water, but his bucket remains empty so he leans into the well and accidentally falls in. The villagers desperately try to save the little boy before it is too late, but the boy seems to have fallen into another world and this thrusts him into many magical worlds, both good and bad. Amazing performances sets, musicians, music, dance, songs, fire and so much more are brought into this incredible production by an amazing production team headed by producer Russell Petroni. GRAMMY-nominated singer-songwriter Leona Lewis; TV stars Miles “Baby Boogaloo” Brown and Marsai Martin from ABC’s Blackish were featured performers. Leona Lewis captivated the audience with an unforgettable, extremely powerful rendition of her smash hit single “Bleeding Love,” concluding the show with a standing ovation as she performed one of her latest chart-topping hits “Thunder.”
