Best Buddies NEVADA 8th Annual SUPERHERO BALL was held Saturday, November 5 inside the Grand Ballroom at The Mirage Resort & Casino and was an outstanding success. The SUPERHERO BALL theme honored those who deserve a Hero’s recognition for the work that they do for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Best Buddies NEVADA SUPERHERO BALL guests were the State’s biggest advocates for people with IDD such as community leaders, sponsors, teachers, students, buddies and those who support the organization which creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with IDD.

The SUPERHERO BALL featured a cocktail reception, gourmet dinner, an exclusive silent auction, entertainment and more. Sean McElwee and Rachel Smith of FOX 5’s “MORE” and “MORE Access were Emcees for the event. This was an upscale event and guests were dressed in formal and cocktail attire. Costumed heroes such as Superman, Batman and Spiderman walked around as they welcomed guests. Special honoree was Sean McElwee , cast member of A&E’s hit TV show, “Born This Way, while special guest John Carlin , senior director, major gifts & planned giving for Best Buddies International spoke on the powerful impact Best Buddies has had in the workplace.

Honoree Sean McElwee

It was an inspiration to hear honoree Sean McElwee speak. Sean has Down Syndrome and is the subject of three books. He attends Community College and is a cast member of the Emmy Award Winning A&E television show “Born This Way.” Sean said he had to work really hard on his speech and although speaking slowly, he gave a wonderful speech about his life. Sean is now 22 years old and a gifted athlete. He has learned to play Basketball, Baseball and Swimming and of course, Speaking. Although it took 18 minutes for him to run a mile in a tournament, he didn’t give up. Sean became a Cub Scout and learned to play the violin. In High School he went to dances, was Varsity Baseball Assistant, started a Glee Fan Club and graduated and got a certificate of completion. He learned to Snorkel and swam with Dolphins in Mexico and has a BlackBelt in Karate. In Middle School he took Drama and acting classes in College. Now he stars in A&E’s show “Born This Way and he lobbied in Washington D.C. He votes, goes on dates and works at Home Depot and is looking forward to doing even more and enjoying life. For him, giving up is not a choice. Sean now wants to show the world the possibilities he is able to live beyond limits and the possibilities for people with IDD. Regardless of his disability, Sean is one remarkable guy that probably does even more than most do without disabilities.
