F.I.O.R.E. Presidents Nelson Sardelli & Sasha Semenoff

Gary Anderson by Mark Bowers

Love is in the air...or, at least, it will be in 11 days. Here are some ideas on how to celebrate Valentine's Day (and the days leading up to it)...
You can start a little early with the F.I.O.R.E. (Fun Italians Organizing Ridiculous Events) folks. Nelson Sardelli, one of the group's presidents (all the F.I.O.R.E. gentlemen are presidents) sends along this announcement...Hello young lovers and presidents (whoever you are). This year, the F.I.O.R.E. Valentine's Day event will be held at lunch time, not at dinner time. Capisce? It will take place on this Thursday, February 9th, at the Italian American Club, 2333 East Sahara. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m., and a delicious buffet will be served at noon. Ladies are welcome, with the widows of presidents as guests of the F.I.O.R.E. organization. For the rest of you, the cost is $28 if dressed in character (maybe as cupid?), and $30 for those in street wear. A live band, with president Gary Anderson at the helm, will provide music for dancing. The ladies will receive roses and chocolates (those fellows know how to treat a girl). There are frequently surprises, in the way of gifts and guests. The afternoon promises the usual nonsensical fun. Spread the word. Invite your friends. Everyone is welcome (well, MOST everyone), but RSVPs are a must. E-mail to [email protected]. See you there.

Sardelli also informs that, at F.I.O.R.E.'s March luncheon, president John Bakie, author and wine connoisseur, will be the guest speaker. There will also be wine tasting and some great hors d'oeuvres (horses de ovaries to some of you guys). Plan to attend both of these fun and interesting luncheons.

Ron & Lisa Smith

Dangerous Curves

And speaking of "love in the air," singing husband and wife duo, Lisa and Ron Smith, the couple who brought Back to Broadway to the Starbright Theatre last year, return to Sun City Summerlin to take music lovers on another journey, this time in conjunction with Valentine's weekend. This time, it's Love is a Many COMPLICATED Thing - From Dating to Mating & Beyond, celebrating relationships! Do you remember your first puppy love or dreaming of finding that special person? Do you remember the dating game, including the highs and the lows, the hits AND the misses? Do you remember finally finding that certain person you wanted to spend the rest of your life with, making the commitment, and discovering what it's like to live with the SAME person through the years...including the joy and love that can transcend all time? Performing some of the greatest love and relationship songs from the past 50 years, Ron and Lisa will make you laugh and they'll make you cry. They will help you remember why you fell in love in the first place. Individually, this talented couple have an impressive list of credits. Lisa Smith is a member of both Shades of Sinatra at the Clarion, and Dangerous Curves, a busy vocal trio. Ron Smith performed in national tours of The Music Man and 42nd Street, and was a cast member of Tournament of Kings at the Excalibur. He is also a voiceover artist. Together, Lisa and Ron have written and performed numerous original shows - Back To Broadway; Side by Side: the Music of Steve & Eydie; Through the Decades: A Holiday Music Revue; Slow Boat To China: the Music of Frank Loesser, from Tin Pan Alley to Broadway, and many more. The Smiths are frequent guest artists in local variety revues, and have become a much sought-after performing duo around the country. Showtime for Love is a Many COMPLICATED Thing at the Starbright Theatre is Sunday, February 12th at 3 p.m. Tickets are on sale now for $15 (only $12 for Sun City residents) at Mountain Shadows, Desert Vista and Pinnacle Community Centers in Sun City Summerlin. Just a reminder- there is no reserved seating at the Starbright Theatre and saving seats is not permitted. There is not a bad seat in the theatre so everyone can enjoy the performances, no matter where they are seated. All ticket sales are check or cash (exact change required). No credit cards accepted.

And speaking of Dangerous Curves, the Curves - Margaret "Gret" Menzies, Karen Merstik-Michaels, and the above mentioned, Lisa Smith - recently performed at Sterling's Upstairs at Vitello's in Studio City, California, where they premiered their brand new cabaret show, Finding Harmony on the Road Less Traveled. The ladies received excellent reviews from two very highly respected cabaret guys! Here is some of what Don Grigware, of BroadwayWorld.com, had to say. "All three are distinctly different beauties in talent, personality and looks, and when they come together, what voices and what beautiful harmony! Not that easy to find nowadays amongst vocalists who strive to overdo style, and scream and screech to grab instant recognition. These gals can really sing and harmonize, and indeed they did with fabulous musical director Dan Ellis at the piano throughout." Robert Machray of logCritics.org, wrote, "These women are totally professional and are obviously skilled and experienced performers... Their voices blend together beautifully and one couldn't help but be brought back to an earlier time when groups, male and female, were at the top of their game. They were reminiscent of the Andrews Sisters but with a more modern sensibility....I look forward to seeing and hearing this group again." Good going, girls!

RagTag Entertainment did a terrific job of Putting It Together, with their recent shows at Green Valley Ranch of the same name. Brandon Albright, Kelly Albright, Lou De Meis, Jay Joseph and Richel Kompst, backed by musicians David Kowelewski, Brian Marsh, Matt Guschi, Tallyn Wesner, Allison McSwain, Fred Watstein, John Nasshan, and Vegas newcomer, Karalyn Todd, filling in for conductor/pianist Bill Fayne, all did stellar jobs in performing some of Stephen Sondheim's best material.

Putting It Together Cast by Erwin Flacks

Congratulations to cast members, Brandon and Kelly Albright, who are first time parents. Their three-month-old baby boy is named Emerson. We predict he will grow up to very musical. After all, he comes from fine stock.

Dick Feeney and Sandy Hackett, former friends and business partners, have finally settled their lawsuit that had been running longer than many shows that open in Las Vegas. When this battle started more than two years ago, we predicted that it would get ugly. It did. The men were co-producers of The Rat Pack Is Back, a tribute to Frank, Dean, Sammy and Joey. In September of 2006, Feeney and his partner, Art Petrie, bought out Hackett's interest in TRP Entertainment, the company that owns and produces The Rat Pack is Back show. Claims were made that the problems between Feeney and Hackett were caused by interference in company affairs by Hackett's wife, Lisa Dawn Miller. On September 9, 2009, Feeney fired Hackett from his role as Joey Bishop. On October 28, 2009, Hackett filed a lawsuit in federal court against Feeney, Petrie and TRP, claiming copyright infringement of the show's script, fraud in inducing the buyout, and for creating problems in Hackett's marriage. As we predicted, it did get ugly...and costly. More than two years later, the legal battle is over.

Rat Pack Is Back Cast in KISS Boots

In many cases, it is the Defendant who wants to avoid trial and is willing to settle by paying damages to the Plaintiff who filed the lawsuit. The opposite happened here, with Hackett agreeing to pay $100,000.00 to Feeney and Petrie. It‘s too bad that the relationship between these men had to come to this. With the legal costs involved, it seems like there really were no "winners." Hopefully, everyone can move on...peacefully.

And speaking of The Rat Pack Is Back...Recently, the boys in Dick Feeney's revue stepped into KISS Boots to honor original Rat Packer, Joey Bishop, who was born 94 years ago today, February 3rd. (Bishop, the last surviving member of the real Rat Pack, passed away on October 17, 2007, at the age of 89.) KISS® By Monster Mini Golf®, and the dynamic cast of the notorious Las Vegas show, The Rat Pack is Back!, pays tribute to Frank, Sammy, Dean and Joey, nightly at the Rio. The KISS® boots have been brought to Vegas for a limited engagement throughout the city, in anticipation of the March opening of Las Vegas' KISS® By Monster Mini Golf®. This will be the first of its kind and will include an indoor glow-in-the-dark custom-designed, rockin' 18-hole miniature golf course, a state-of-the-art arcade, the largest KISS® gift shop in the world, A KISS® Gallery, "Hotter Than Hell" Wedding Chapel, a private VIP Room, FANtastic KISS® themed event rooms and the "Rock ‘n Roll All Nite" Café. Monster Mini Golf is the leader in cutting-edge indoor glow-in-the-dark Monster themed entertainment centers. Each custom-designed course also features an arcade game area, private event rooms, an in-house DJ, and fantastic entertainment for the whole family. More than 30 years of record-breaking tours around the globe include high-profile appearances at Super Bowl XXXIII, the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, the 2005 Rockin' The Corps concert dedicated to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, and, most recently, the 2009 finale of American Idol that boasted 30 million viewers. The KISS legacy continues to grow, generation after generation. The unparalleled devotion and loyalty of the KISS Army to the "Hottest Band in the World" is a striking testament to the band's unbreakable bond with its fans. Magician Joel Ward

* * * * * * * *

Performing in the Gold Coast showroom/lounge, at Paul Stone's Vegas Magic Theatre, tonight and Saturday, February 3rd and 4th (no Sunday show this week due to Super Bowl activities), are Keith Fields and Joel Ward (with assistant, beautiful Angela Acosta, daughter of Jeanne Bavaro and Bill Acosta). Ben Stone is hosting. Keith Fields is truly an international performer. He was born in the Caribbean, brought up in England, and is now living in the USA. He is a diverse performer with the ability to play to any audience. One minute he is a stand-up comedian, the next a hilarious prop comic; then he will smack you in the face by producing a goldfish bowl from nowhere! He is definitely not your average comedian or your average magician! He is more a combination of Carrot Top and John Cleese, with a touch of the late Welsh prop comedian and magician, Tommy Cooper, thrown in for good measure. And all this is delivered with a full dose of English style and sophistication that is guaranteed to hit your funny bone. Joel Ward's high energy, original magic has astonished people throughout the world. As he makes things appear and disappear, he presents award-winning magic by combining classical magic with a contemporary touch. Joel's mind-boggling magical talent ranges from comical audience participation, to interactive close-up magic and flashy Las Vegas styled illusions. Joel became interested in magic when he was six years old. A magician at a school assembly had chosen Joel from the audience to assist on stage. Since then, Ward has taken his magic very seriously. Born and raised in Cardiff by the Sea, California, Joel started his own business at age 10 and started to perform at children's birthday parties. By age 15, Joel became a World Champion Teen Magician after placing 1st at the International Brotherhood of Magicians annual competition, the World's Largest Magic Organization. That same year Joel was picked out of hundreds of magicians to appear on television with Master Magician, Lance Burton. The show, "Lance Burton-Young Magicians Showcase," was filmed at the Monte Carlo Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Joel currently performs hundreds of shows a year. In 2007, Joel performed over 500 shows during a year contract at the Horizon Casino & Resort in South Lake Tahoe. In 2009 Joel performed on NBC's "The Bonnie Hunt Show," and was part of the series called, "Masters of Illusion," on My Network TV. Joel just finished headlining the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus show, "Boom A Ring," which toured the East Coast and Puerto Rico. In January of 2011 Joel made his first appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and on Comedy Central's Tosh.0. Joel lives in Los Angeles, and performs for national television broadcasts, corporate clients, casinos, cruise ships, and others. Host, Ben Stone is an engaging and stylish entertainer whose personality is infectious and future is bright; Ben is the definitive heartthrob with the talent to match. In addition to being an accomplished singer/songwriter, Ben has been entertaining audiences around the world with his unique brand of magic for more than a decade. With a private client list that reads like the ‘Who's Who' of a top celebrity magazine, Ben has been invited to perform for A-list stars and dignitaries at exclusive venues as diverse as the legendary Playboy Mansion in Hollywood to the prestigious House of Lords in London. Not to mention multiple command performances for members of the British Royal family. Ben has also appeared on International TV with performances aired across the UK, USA, as well as numerous European countries. Ben has appeared at the world famous London Palladium Theatre on no less than five occasions. He has also performed at many other notable West End Theatres. Showtimes are tomorrow, Saturday, at 5 and 7:30 p.m. (no Sunday show due to Super Bowl).

Next week's performers are Graham P. Jolley, Christopher Hart and Nino Frediani, with Ben Stone hosting. Showtimes are Thursday, Friday and Sunday at 7 p.m., and Saturday at 5 and 7:30 p.m. From $14.95 plus tax and convenience fees. Join performers in the Showroom Lounge one hour prior to the show for a FREE pre-show presentation of close up magic, card readings and other fun. Disappearing weekly! A new show every week.

Auditions for The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas will be held at the downtown Plaza Hotel, tomorrow, Saturday, February 4th, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. All roles are open. Looking for energetic male and female singer/dancers. Rehearsals for the musical start the middle of this month. Show opens on March 31st, in the Anthony Cools Showroom at the Plaza. Those auditioning should prepare 32 bars of an upbeat musical theater-style (not from the show) or Country song that best displays their vocal range. Go prepared to move and dance. No appointment necessary. The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas is based on the true story of a legendary Texas Brothel known as the Chicken Ranch, which operated from the 1840s to 1973. Protected by a friendly Sheriff, and frequented by politicians, football teams and others, the Chicken Ranch thrived in the small town of Gilbert, Texas. Girls come from all over to work at the ranch and make a little extra cash. However, a crusading do-gooder Houston radio commentator and his conservative audience expose the Chicken Ranch, forcing it to shut its doors forever. The 1982 film starred Burt Reynolds, Dolly Parton, Dom DeLuise, Charles Durning and Jim Nabors.

Voice impressionist, Bethany Owen, who appeared in a number of shows in Las Vegas some years back - including Sid and Marty Krofft‘s Comedy Kings (that also featured John Byner and Rick Michels) at the Sands (now The Venetian/Palazzo); Calendar Girls, produced by Bethany's then husband, Ben Morgan, and Joe Jackson (yes, THAT Joe Jackson), at the Maxim (now the Westin Casurina); The Great Pretenders at the Dunes (now Bellagio) - is back, this time, in a show called One Voice starring Bethany Owen, at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino on West Flamingo. Billed as "The Woman of a 1001 Voices and Faces," Bethany showcases her multiple impressions inside the Rio's King's Room, at 2:30 p.m., every day but Sundays. Domenick Allen & Leigh Zimmerman

Vintage Jay Rogers & Keith Thompson

If you plan to see the new Madonna directed movie, W.E., look for Broadway singer/actress Leigh Zimmerman playing a high society lady. Madonna also wrote the story, focusing on the affair between King Edward VIII and American divorcée, Wallis Simpson. Leigh, who is married to the multitalented Domenick Allen, filmed her part some time ago. Leigh and Domenick, and their daughter Cayleigh, make their home in Las Vegas. The grownups looked very glamorous as they attended the Nevada Ballet Theatre's Black & White Ball on January 28th. This year‘s annual event honored actress Eva Longoria. (See the accompanying photo.)

This isn't a paid advertisement, it's just a suggestion. It only takes one bad experience and one bad employee to send a potential and/or ongoing customer to a competitive business. These days, good customer service seems to have gone the way of eight track tapes and rotary dial telephones. EXCEPTIONAL service is SO rare, when you get it, it deserves a special mention...so that is what we are doing. We used to do business with an Office Depot store on East Tropicana...until the place became a joke. We predicted its closure about six months before it became another empty store. We vowed never to go back to any Office Depots again. Never say never. As fate would have it, we needed a piece of furniture that is only carried locally by that chain of stores. We went to the Maryland Parkway location, near the Boulevard Mall, where we dealt with the store's Assistant Manager, Anthony Cuddeback. Whatever he is being paid, it isn't enough. This is the kind of employee that every business should have - very helpful, accommodating and polite. It is apparent that Mr. Cuddeback cares about the impression he leaves with his customers...unlike some places we have patronized in the past couple of years. Good job, Anthony.

Regarding Keith Thompson (Musical Director for Jersey Boys) and cabaret performer/actor Jay Rogers recent show, Back From the Abyss, at New York's Metropolitan Room, David Hurst, of Next Magazine, said, "Veteran showstoppers and cabaret royalty Jay Rogers and Keith Thompson announced they were Back from the Abyss for one night only on Jan 9 at The Metropolitan Room. Long revered for their hilarious and inventive musical partnership on shows as legendary as Yes, This Is My Real Voice, Broccoli Head and Sucker!, these two performers knocked it out of the park." How about someone booking the duo here, so Las Vegans can see them "knock it out of the park"?

He's up to his usual tricks. Obaloc Phillips or Troy Adams, or whatever he is calling himself this week, doing (monkey) business as COLABO whatever, had been advertising Footloose and Snow White as his Spring shows, has changed his plans (again). Now, he is touting Glee the Musical and Snow White as his next productions. Watch this guy, especially where children are involved. You have been warned.

Irving Benson & Johnny Carson

Actor/producer/writer, Bart Williams, reminds us that one of the last of, if not the ONLY, surviving Top Bananas, Irving Benson, celebrated his 98th birthday on January 31st. Williams, who co-starred with Benson in a couple of Maynard Sloate produced shows - Top Banana and A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum - at the downtown Union Plaza in the '80s, is one of the writer/producers of a documentary called The Last First Comic, inspired by, and featuring Benson. Happy birthday, Mr. Benson.
