We hadn't been to Vegas since 1997, so we were looking forward to seeing the new hotels. Picked the Aladdin because it was fairly new and was centrally located on the strip. Had a non stop flight from Austin, waited 10 minutes for a cab ($14 incl tip) and got to the Aladdin at 3:00 pm. There was no wait at check in, we were offered an upgrade for a fountain veiw for $30/night but I declined. The check in was one floor below the casino, so didnt have to walk throught the clutter of the casino. All the elevators were very close to the rooms, so no long walks. Unpacked and headed to the casino and entered the slot tournament. For $25 you get $10 coupon for food at the Aladdin, $10 in free slot play, $20 off the magic show and a cheap prize. No luck in the tournament and we never had any luck with the slots in the casino. On to the Dessert Passage Mall to eat and shop. The Cheeseburger at the Oasis had great cheeseburgers, but a little expensive - $25 for 2 cheeseburgers, one order of fries and two cokes, plus tip. Lots of nice shops and a variety of restaurants. Walked down to the Flamingo to pick up Gladys Knight tickets for the next night and stopped at the Barbary Coast to catch the end of Big Elvis's show. He's great, didnt realize how big he really is. Great voice and the crowd gets into his show. Picked up our tickets and walked to the Bellagio to watch the fountains, but they were cancelled because of the high winds. Kept walking to the Monte Carlo and ate at the brew pub and watched the basketball game. Great food and service. Headed back to the Aladdin and lost some more money on slots. Still on Texas time so we went to bed early.
On Thursday we ate breakfast in the mall and headed towards the Mandalay Bay. Stopped at the Coke store and M&M store, caught the monrail from the Luxor and walked forever inside Mandalay Bay. Stopped on the way back to eat at the Harley Davidson Cafe, very good food. Got back to the room and the wife took a nap and I went to the pool. The Aladdin's pool area is not very impressive, two pools with a large open area in between. The pools are only 3 feet deep and not much room around them. It was 70 degrees that day so they werent crowded. Got ready for the show, lost some more money on slots and headed to the Flamingo but had to stop one more time to see Big Elvis. Gladys Knight had cancelled the night before because of a "cold" and her tickets for our show were being sold on the half price tickets outlet but she put on a great show. Show lasted 1 hr. and 15 min. but she was on stage almost the entire show. I had heard some negative reviews but thought it was worth the price and it was sold out. Walked across the street and toured the Forum Shops and ate at the Cheesecake Factory. On the way back got to see the Bellagio fountains, very impressive. Began to get very irritated with the porn people and the timeshare salespeople. They really start to get on your nerves.
Friday was a day of walking. After breakfast at the hotel at Starbucks, went to the Venetian, then caught the shuttle from Harrah's to the Rio. Walked to the Gold Coast and at least broke even on their slots but lost it at the Palms. Shuttled back to the strip and stopped at Margaritaville to buy some t-shirts. Back to the hotel at 1:00 and used our food coupons for the Spice Market Buffet. Unbelievable selection of food and all very good. So many choices but I concentrated on the American and Seafood sections. We were full so back to the room for a nap, and I went to the pool again. That night we went to the Comedy Stop at the Tropicana. With coupons, we paid $15 per person which included 2 drinks, a great deal. Three comics, all were hilarious. Also got to see the free show in the casino, Air Play, two trapeze guys flying from the ceiling, it was OK. On the way back to the Aladdin we walked through the MGM Grand and ate dinner at the Zanzibar Cafe in the hotel casino. Very good food and large portions.
Our flight left at 12:00 noon so we ate at McDonalds, it felt good to eat something reasonably priced. Just enough time to lose some more money on slots before we caught a shuttle to the airport. Long lines to get thru security but a smooth flight back home. Felt good to be back in Texas, but cant wait to get back to Vegas. Really enjoyed the Aladdin and would definitely stay there again.
