Wife And I have not been to Las Vegas in 12 years. Last time stayed at the Desert Inn!. Northwest flight out was uneventful which is good. Not too long a wait getting our bags but the wait at the Dollar Rental car office was about 30-40 minutes. We had a reservation and with that we had to get on the shuttle bus to go to the office on the car lot. This is where the delay was. If you did not have a reservation you could get your paperwork done at the airport where there was no waiting and shuttle to your car. Don't know if the rates where the same without pre-reserving.

Check-in at the Westin was very fast. Got to our room and the smell of smoke was terrible. I booked on-line and made a mistake and booked a smoking room when I really wanted a non-smoking. Went down to the front desk and saw a smiling face (Jason) who was next to Gloomy Gus who checked us in. Jason immediately got us into the proper room and made sure that we had a great view. The rooms at the Westin are extremely comfortable. Great beds! The hotel is small with a great staff. Valet parking guys were extremely courteous. The hotel has only a coffe shop so we did not eat there. Went to the pool which was a disappointment. Located on the second floor roof it was very small and bland. No amenities. Recap: Great rooms and people but I would not stay again.

We went to Vegas to attend a 50th birthday party for my wife's best friends husband. They have lived in Vegas for 4 years. Much of our time was spent with them but on our first nigh, a Thursday, we walked down the strip to NY NY and had a great meal at Nine Fine Irishmen - an authentic Irish Pub. Food was very good and the live entertainment was great! Also ate at Mon Ami Gabi in the Paris. They do not take reservations for their outdoor dining but we made them for inside. A beautiful restaurant with a small menu. Mostly Steaks and Frites. A nice night. By the way if you want to see great restaurant reviews and customer comments go to www.vegasreview.com and click on the dining section. There you can review virtually every restaurant in Vegas and if you want can narrow your search by food type. It's a great site.

Went to the top of the Rio for a cocktail at about 6pm on Monday. Lounge has a great view and was very empty. Service was terrible. Waited forever for a waitress. When she arrived she was certainly not the brightest light on the Strip. It's amazing how cosmetic surgery opens all those doors. Wife and friend had a martini, husband and I had a beer. $12.50 for each martini and $6.00 for a plastic bottle of Miller Lite! I have lived in NYC all my life (until 1 1/2 years ago) so I am aware of prices but this place was a rip. At least offer a glass with the $6.00 plastic bottle!

All in all a great trip. We will go back again soon! Also give yourself time at the airport for your return home. Long lines at check-in (on a Tuesday!) and security. Airport personnel were very courteous and quick - just lots of folks at the airport.
