We always stay at Tropicana because their comps are generous and the employees are great. (Most all of the employees we have met have been there over 10 years). We were invited for a "Big Game" party and had a room on the 19th floor in the back tower. We like staying in this tower as it is a straight shot down to the pool and the Tropicana pools are beautiful. (The disadvantage of the back tower is that it is a long walk to the casino.) The outdoor pools were not open but there's an indoor pool and you can walk outside and use a lounge chair to enjoy the Vegas sun.
We are slot machine players and some video poker. Didn't have much luck gambling but stayed within our budget. We budget $2-$300 a day each for gambling. Almost all of our gambling was at Tropicana. The comps received included 4 nights free room and $90 cash back.
We're not fancy diners - we enjoyed the burgers in the Calypso Restaurant - be sure to get the $3. off coupons available at the players club along with a free deck of cards. We've always had good food at the Calypso Restaurant. I would not recommend the buffet - pretty boring choices. One night, we were very hungry and didn't want to wait for service so we walked across the street to the Excalibur food court and had a quick burger at McDonalds. Another night, we walked down to Cheesecake Factory in Ceasar's Palace. Food there is great and portions are huge. We had the pizza and the cobb salad and had plenty to bring back to our room (we had a refrigerator). We take our own small coffee pot as I'm a big coffee drinker and we like to have coffee in the room.
The private superbowl party (called "Big Game" party) was very nice. Plenty of free food and drinks and huge screens to watch the game. We go to Vegas 2 or 3 times a year and have made it to VIP status at Tropicana so we received invitations to this party.
We are both in our 50's. The Tropicana is not the fanciest hotel but it's comfortable and you don't have to be a high roller to qualify for VIP treatment.
Another stop I would recommend is to the Sin City brewery stand in the Aladdin Desert Passage. My husband loves micro brewed beer and really enjoys spending time there.
It was hard to come back to the Michigan below zero weather after the 70 degree days in Vegas! Our next trip will probably be in August for our anniversary.
