I have enjoyed other trip reports and findings. I will pass along my events. I am 56 and wife is 55
Booked USAirways in Feb. N/S 8:30p and return 4p N/S My wife is a smoker and was a tough trip for her. Patches and all. Of all the airports we went through, (Tampa, Las Vegas, Charlotte) Tampa was the most civilized of the 3. They have an outdoor smoking area after the security check point. Good job Tampa. Vegas use to have the smoking section, which is close, Why? Nobody is forcing you to go into the rooms to smoke so why not keep them open. Charlotte, NC one of the countrys biggest tobacco growing states, even have a tobacco shop in the airport, so why not make accomadations for smokers? USAir canceled our N/S 4pm flight and we had to go from Vegas,Charlotte, Tampa. All flights started out late. You have to improve USAir.
Hotels: Golden Nugget,Luxor. Paid for the Golden Nugget. Pool area is new and greatly improved with the fish tank, and slide. Bar is open til 2a Pool closes 10p but the hot tub is open til 2a. The jets are the best we found in Vegas. They have many beds to lay on, sofa seating also. They have lounges that are in the water you can lay on. Very nice.
Luxor was comped for 2 days Pool area was so so. They could use a good upgrade like the Golden Nugget. Room was on the 30th floor of the pyramid. Great view of the pool area. Room was very nice and liked the tiled bathroom area. Very roomy.
Gambling: Seems like MGM properties are as tight if not tighter than Harrah's. Spin 10 times, on a slot, and got nothing. Not even a cherry or two. The tables were worse. Maybe I should have been playing the don'ts on Craps! First night we were in the Golden Gate playing blackjack. I get 8 3 and I double down and get the 10. Dealer showing 10 had an Ace and I lose 1/2 my bet. You get 21 and LOSE. It is time to do something else.
Shows: Not big on shows but we booked LOVE at the Mirage back in Feb. Got the upper deck and the seats were great. Not a bad seat in the house. Used the advice from others about being up high and glad we did. Grew up with the beatles and very good show.
Food: Lots of cheap places. Golden Gate shrimp cocktails and Pastrami sandwiches which is all good. Had breakfeast at 4 queens. Not the best of breakfeast's. Bacon was hardly cooked and very very fatty. Then they took it back and deep fried it still no good. Would not go back there. After the Love show we went and got reservations at Kokomo's steak house at the Mirage. I love lamb chops and the wife had a petite filet mignon. Meat was out of this world. Baked potato was very good. Mash potato was so so. At $8 each the mash was not worth it. Drank water, no desert, no appitizer, no salad and bill was over $100. Very nice and romantic setting. If money is no object go there and enjoy your meal. Pharaoh's Pheast was a disapointment at $20 each for supper. Seems like everything is higher in price and lower in quality.
Went to the Pinball hall of Fame at 3330 Tropicana Ave. About 4 miles from the strip on the left hand side from the strip and the bus ride was a nice trip. We played the games we grew up on. Very delightful afternoon. Try it, you will like it. We did ride the duce several times. Yes, it takes awhile but when you are drinking no will pull you over on the bus and give you a DUI ticket.
The comps are tighter. After playing for 1 hour and betting $30-40 average at craps, at Excalibur, Dave would not comp me a breakfeast due to the new MGM policies on comping. In the past, before the MGM take over, it was no problem getting a free breakfeast from Dave.
These big corporations are in the profit making business. Slots are tighter everywhere. Seems like the mob treated people better than
the corps. I love the OLD vegas much better. With all of these new high price condos/hotels coming and since our last trip we lost. Boardwalk, Bourbon st, Westward HO, Stardust,Lady Luck, and soon the Frontier. It is not fun anymore. Will be a very L O N G time before returning. Reno anyone? LJ
