In Vegas again for a large professional meeting. I could not plans until the last minute and was on a limited budget, so I decided to stay at Motel 6 again. Motel 6 has recently removated some of their rooms and they are actually quite nice. Still small, still basic, but new paint, new furniture, new mattress and wi-fi! The room was $30.59 a night and the wi-fi was $2.99 a day. Not bad!
After an early evening arrival, I decided to go out and walk part of the strip. I took lots of pictures. I love Las Vegas at night. Grabbed a quick hot dog at Pinks (Planet Hollywood). It was very good. I didn't even order any side dishes -- the toppings were loaded on! Early to be the first night -- I was pooped after a very long day.
Sunday morning, I started with the Spice Market Buffet at Planet Hollywood. I had a coupon for $5 off that I had found on the internet, so that really helped. They breakfast buffet is very good. I got there before the inflated Sunday brunch prices too. Excellent selection -- I did not leave hungry.
After that, I went to register for my conference, which was at the Venetian/Sands Convention center. Then back to my room to get set to make a dash to the Tropicana. Let's Make A Deal with Wayne Brady is currently being filmed there. The tickets are free. I didn't want to dress up in a costume, I just wanted to see a free show. There's a lot of forms to fill out and you have to turn in phones, cameras, etc, but the show was enjoyable. The taping will air in January and I am looking forward to seeing how it comes out! Wayne Brady is a hoot too.
Sunday evening I was back on the streets. I had a reception to attend at Harrah's (state association of the conference I was attending). Saw some old friends. Ate some reception appetizers. Skipped the drinks -- even bottled water was $4. Walked back to Bellagio to watch the fountains for a while (they never cease to amaze me), then back to Motel 6 and in bed by 10PM. Many people think there is something wrong when you are in bed at 10PM in Vegas!
My conference started on Monday morning. Our keynote speaker was Dennis Quaid. I am a pharmacist and he spoke about medication safety (his twins were almost killed by a medication overdose). he was quite knowledagable about the subject and was enjoyable to listen to. The rest of the day was spent in meetings. I finished it up with a dessert reception at the Grand Lux Cafe and the Venetian. Desserts were excellent. All the food I saw coming out of the kitchn looked and smelled good too.
Tuesday was another jam packed meeting day, but started with breakfast buffet at Planet Hollywood again, this time with a colleague. He agreed that it was outstanding too. Evening dinner meeting, then back to the motel.
Wednesday was the last meeting day for me. After morning sessions, I took the Deuce down to Fremont Street and went shopping with a freind. I had bought two 3-day bus passes and I used them a lot. They were $15 each for unlimited rides. I really got my money out of them. After shopping, had lunch back at Canter's Deli at TI. Pastrami sandwich was very good, but really overpriced. The conference had a party that night at the Venetian. Our entertainment was a band -- The Bacon Brothers (as in Kevin Bacon, the actor). Great concert. Got close up photos. My third celebrity that week. After the concert, a gang of us went back to Fremont Street to see the lights. Ate the $8.99 prime rib special at the Golden Gate Casino, which was actually quite good.
Back to the motel in time to get 3 hours of sleep before leaving for the airport. Wow, another whirlwind trip. Got some sleep on the plane coming home. Ready to go back and do it again!
